I am about to replace rear pads on my G82.

I have done this on a G01 and I believe they use the exactly the same caliper (BMW uses similar trashy single piston calipers for rear brakes ever since anyway). I took off the parking brake actuator and tighten the torx screw and finally pushed the piston back with my finger. This step alone makes the entire process 3 times longer.

Recently I realized that some people just use the traditional generic piston retract tool to screw the piston back in like this:

Can anyone confirm this is safe and effective in restting the parking brake? There must be some internal mechanism behind the piston that lead to the same outcome, right?

All I’m going to say is if you want to do it right, you dial back the ebrake via software to put it into service, replace pads and then take it out of service. It’s not worth risking physical damage to the caliper when it’s easy to plug in. I never understood the corner cutting when doing this. If you’re gonna work on modern cars yourself, get the necessary diag software to go along with it.

If you don’t retract the EPB then a spreader tool is gonna break stuff. The guy in the video must have electronically retracted the EPB before using the piston compress tool. Using the tool is okay if the EPB was already retracted (electronically reversed or manually loosened).

Purchased a set of ispeed2000 pads front and rear. What software/tool will I need to perform this swap?

Bimmerlink plus OBD adapter. Get bimmerlink app, it’s 40 bucks, app will show you compatible adapters. This is WAY easier than removing brake motor/cables etc. you use app to put in service mode and motor will retract from piston.

I second this. Did it originally the hard way by disassembling the e brake motor and dialing it back by hand. What wasn't mentioned in the video I watched, was that if you don't spin the motor back to the original position, your dash lights up like a Christmas tree. Ended up buying Bimmerlink, setting the e brake to service, returning it to normal position, and clearing the codes anyways. Do it the smart way, not the hard way. Those Isweep pads are dope by the way. Love mine.

Are you saying that's how you cleared the errors? I got the Christmas tree of errors: brake malfunction, chassis stability, and driver aid. I went to maintenance mode with BimmerLink and back to normal, but that didn't help. It was unable to clear any errors so far.

Yes, but it was unable to clear anything. I'll go and try again. I just pulled the calipers off again in maintenance mode, pushed the pistons in and put it all back together. I'm about to wake up the car, do it properly if possible, reset the errors, and see what I got.

Edit: that didn't work. I had to remove the brake motors and reset the car again.

Did you use bimmerlink to set the car into maintenance mode, on the initial brake change? Or you're using it now to try to clear the codes?
