I actually greatly preferred the old positioning of the cupholders! My coffee cup was a much better armrest. They are so far out of reach you have to do a sit-up now.

It seems like many car companies made this same move at the same time tucking the coffee cups upfront - my loaner audi the other day had them in the same location. Not only are they out of reach, they also block the buttons for climate etc.

Simplicity through over-engineered complication. That is the German way.
