I watched this and loved it.

There seems to be a wave of reviewers claiming that the Competition (read:Auto) is a much better car than the Base.

Yes, supposed to be. If you don’t like it that’s fine but it’s not universal truth.

Those YMB buckets are growing on me! If I wasn't dead set on IOMG, I'd love to spec them.

Which is such a strange concept to me. There is no"better". There is just a binary option between whether you want a manual or not. I wouldn't even consider the competition as a result. It could be 30% better and I still wouldn't want an auto.

I drive autos like a grandma. They put me to sleep no matter what just because I become so mentally disengaged from the driving experience.

Depends on the car. I'm over manual econoboxes that we have in Europe, most are so strangled by regulations, electronics, bad pedal boxes, etc., that they're just not fun.

M3 is a different story.

Not in this car, it's honestly way too fast for a 6 speed

Until you get used to it and realize you probably don't need to be driving flat out on the street. This M3 in particular has insane performance. You can enjoy the lower ends of that more in a manual IMO. I seriously doubt I will ever be able to extract the G8x performance limits even on the base model.

I see on the main screen the shift indicator appears and is fully red at times. Will this car let you go past redline or when you hit redline will it shut down so you can’t go further? Also, does that shift indicator also appear on the heads up display?

will not let you go over red. Fuel shutoff.
I tried in autocrossing. When trying to be lazy not to shift up. LOL

Yes, the simple "base" is getting beaten up a little, but honestly those reviewers are wrong on a lot of items (most importantly the manual is what makes this car so unique).

I would never even consider the 8AT..... Who cares if the car has less tq the manual is very unique and will always be the more fun car to drive over a long period of time, if you want more tq add a simple tune. #6MT4life

It's trendy to trash the stick.

What’s funny about that is, all the folks (reviewers) who have been complaining about the loss of manual transmissions are the same one’s saying the Comp is better.

I didn’t drive the Comp because I wanted a manual. Maybe if I drove one I would change my mind. I doubt it’s a bad car but I think the better car is the one that you want not what someone on the internet says is better.

I get all the M3 Comp advantages if you are tracking your car (and I know lots of M3 owners do, so it is a significant consideration) but for daily use, M340i xdrive makes more sense over the M3 comp from a value perspective without scarifying much on straight line performance. In my opinion the manual option makes the M3 a no-brainer over the M340i even if one does not track their car.

stefan Honestly, that's what leaves me stumped.
You could say that you prefer the acceleration but outside of acceleration times the cars are virtually the same. 0 difference.

The placebo "competition" effect is real.

I had my eyes on a GSF originally and was even willing to wait for the IS500 for the 5.0 engine but I simply looked at the manual G80 as the far better option for me. At the end the, you simply cannot find a pure manual performance oriented sedan unless you are willing to wait for Cadillac.

I am more than happy with my choice, especially now that looks like CS will be only auto...

I drove once a Corvette c7 Z06, 650 hp, and the automatic gearbox just ruined the whole experience, in my opinion. Of course, the ZF unit in the M3 is probably better than the gearbox in the Z06 but still, the delay when shifting make the whole experience looking fake and non intuitive.

On the other hand, I could understand to choose a 911 GT3 in pdk, as that gearbox is so responsive and is so much easier to drive fast on the track.
