// StudioRSR \\ G80 Project Senna: Track Ride-Along & impressions

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
We tracked our new 2021 BMW M3 dubbed "Project Senna" in 100% stock form at Buttonwillow CW13 to set a baseline time.
We're pleased to report that the G80 M3's amazing braking, handling, and power delivery allowed us to run multiple 1:57 laps 6x times in a row with the fastest lap at 1:57.444 in one of the sessions in the early afternoon.
With a lot of fast drivers out on track this day, we had maybe 3 completely open laps and our fastest lap was completed with traffic in the back sweeper. Our lap timer's predictive lap was showing a 1:55 during this lap before we had to pass the Cayman!

I am not sure if you tested a stock F80 when it was originally released but if you did, how did it do?

In the F8X track times thread for CW13 there is a 1:51, but the second fastest time is a 1:55 and third a 1:56 (all on slicks). Yeah so it seems like this thing is the Business!

Our group of friends that we track with every month is full of F8x M3/M4's all with varying levels of upgrades, and on average at Buttonwillow an F8x with Coilovers, 200 treadwear tires, and a Stage 2 tune is around 1:55 to 1:59 depending on the driver/conditions. Most F8x owners seem to use the sub-2min mark as a big goal to reach.

Ayrton Senna is a big inspiration for the owner of the shop/car. His favorite quote to describe the "Rhythm" in our name is from Senna's quote and we have up in our offices..."And suddenly I realized that I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was driving it by a kind of instinct, only I was in a different dimension." You guys have no idea how excited he was when he saw what BMW named that color haha

Our Operations director favors the other quote though "If you no longer go for a gap which exists you are no longer a racing driver."

He also chose the G80 in Sao Paulo Yellow and painted our waiting room to match lol, and Sao Paulo, Brazil is where Senna was born.

Ingerlagos, the race track, is also in Sao Paolo. I see this as a good excuse to get another M car in interlagos blue

Can you speak more about your experience with the Pirellis (on and off track)?

Thanks guys! We're going back to Buttonwillow CW13 this Friday on the factory Michelins to see if there's a difference. We'll also be logging temperatures for CSF Cooling to get baseline IAT's and low pressure cooling system #'s for their Heat Exchanger development:

The Pirellis were a pleasant surprise. We were kind of bummed when we picked up the car from the dealer and saw it had the Pirellis, but after this track test, they did just fine. Grip was very predictable and did not heat flash and suddenly become greasy…it took about 7 laps of hard driving for them to get greasy.

On the street, they're quiet and don't have any complaints about how they feel. We've been driving on the street on the Michelins and can't tell a difference between them.

I would be interested in hearing about how the brake pads worked for you. Both in performance and especially in longevity. I tracked my G82 for the first time 2 weeks ago, and I am curious to see how my experience with the OEM pads compares with others. My day was 6 sessions totaling 2 1/2hrs at Sebring. Performance was surprisingly good for street pads, with just a hint of easily managed fade from time to time at the end of a few sessions. Wear however was a different matter altogether. These pads are approximately 1/2in thick when new, which is quite beefy, but at the end of the day the fronts had worn down by 50%, and the rears by 75% meaning that these are 1 day pads at the track. And you?

So looks like a 1:55 car with 200tw tire or even 1:54 with a cup2 or equivalent tire. That's serious machine territory.

I see porsche GT3 guys running 1:55-1:56 on the regular.

How is the outside shoulder wear ??

Great post
