Interesting, we now have 4 tire manufacturers supplying OE tires for the G8X:
  • Michelin
  • Continental
  • Pirelli
  • Yokohama

I like this series it gives us some good info to digest. Kind of surprised how much wider the front tires are in comparison to F80 when seen side by side. I see patching tires in the future of G80 owners.

I think that was Davit Gray which takes on a Bronze/Gold at times? Looks pretty good.

There you go, clear as can be the tire wall and it’s impact on stability is the reason to size up the rear wheel diameter on the G8X, just as for example CanAutM3 argued and not for increased rear contact patch and stability as for the Porsche where the tire diameter is also upsized.

But wow seeing the F8X front tire next to the G8X really put in perspective how much wider the G8X tire is...

Love these videos btw., very to the point.

I didn't watch the video yet, but does it explain why you wouldn't also want the larger size in front for the same reason? Or do we just assume that, because less sidewall will naturally impact ride quality, they use the smaller wheel up front as a compromise to minimize that consequence?

As I write this, I wonder if we might see equal diameter wheels on the AWD models. Though, I think Porsche uses the unequal sizes on their both their RWD and AWD 911 models. And come to think of it, IIRC, the AWD G8x mules have been using the same wheels as the RWD cars.

The video does explain that. The higher tire wall in the front give more comfort and more air volume to dissipate and distribute heat. He also mention better grip in the wet as a reason. I guess the higher tire has deeper grooves.

Porsche use the same tires for RWD and AWD on the 992.

As was greatly debated in the wheel diameter thread, I am of the opinion that the end goal of BMW and Porsche are different for using different front and rear wheel diameters.

For the G8X, BMW's goal is to vary the tire sidewall height (for all the reasons described in the video) while maintaining tire diameter.

For the 992, Porsche's goal is to increase the rear TIRE diameter while keeping the sidewall height relatively constant. As a matter of fact, the rear tires on the 992 have a higher sidewall than the front ones, in opposition to what we see on the G8X.

Don't think so, they have been evaluating test tires from (at least) 4 tires manufacturers but it does not mean all have been approved. There are also obviously non technical considerations for the final manufacturer selection. I believe only two manufacturers will eventually supply tires for a given front/rear combination. Michelin for sure and my bet would be on Continental for the second (same than for the M2C) .

I hope most cars get Michelin

Interesting point on the heat dissipation of the front tire. I recall in the Viper ACR Ring record years ago they had constant issues because the front tire has almost no sidewall.

Amen.

My E90 M3 came with Contis. When I swapped to PSSs it completely transformed the car.

Same thing with 2x former SUVs, one came with Bridgestone the other with Goodyears, Michelins transformed them as well. Luckily both our current cars came with Michelins. Best tires for the street by far in my experience.

I really wanted to see the 18" wheels mounted. Yet to see a pic of them.

This car has definitely evolved from the F80. I am very curious how it will all comes together, we need driving reviews ASAP.

Absolutely. Whether summer or winter tires, whenever I get non Michelins I tend to regret it.
I don't know what magic sauce they put into their tires but they do a good job at it

Same here, when I upgraded from PS2 to PSS on my E92 it transformed the car

But I agree, Michelin do have a secret sauce.

I also found the point about heat dissipation quite interesting.

In my opinion, it is likely to balance the front and rear tread heat to maintain balanced handling as the tires are worked up, especially since the G8X is carrying more weight on the front axle. Quoted from the video just before he talks about the staggered diameters: "It's the balance between front and rear tyres that is essential". It cannot be for absolute heat dissipation because they are offering 3 different front tire aspect ratios:
  • 275/40R18 with 285/35R19
  • 275/35R19 with 285/30R20
  • 285/30R20 with 295/25R21

Good point, could very well be.

I interpreted "This is the summer version of the full tyre programme that we are now offering on the new M3/M4 models" as that they would all make production.

To be fair, the video is a bit misleading, showing the tyres in front of another filmed with a fish eye lens. It looks like the G8X tyre is almost 50% wider . If they would have put the F8X tyre in front, it would have been much less impressive. Also, with the 255, they also chose the smallest of the F8X tyre .

Some wide angle but not fish eye for sure. But you are right if you look at front vs front of the two tires. However if you focus at the area were the two tires meet distortion is insignificant (front of F8X tire vs rear of the G8X tire) and there is still a very big difference.

I have 255s so for me all this extra contact area will be valid

I don't get the argument of heat dissipation at all. Bigger rims evaquate more heat. The higher side wall on the front end is common sense: it makes the dynamic behaviour (mainly understeer) of the front less snappy. Nevertheless a pro driver would probably prefer lower side walls for more traject precision. They optimised it for the occasional track hero I guess.
