Nice product, I was just thinking about how to deal with a possible NACS connector three years down the road as I am waiting for my electrician buddy to come back from his business trip.

He also believes this new Wall Connector, as well as previous ones, will now be updated to have App control. Right now, it only has very limited WiFi access. |

Touché. But unlike “that other person”s” repeated posts, this product will actually work with our BMWs and I will only need to post this once! 😂😂😂

Thanks VirtualGuitars for finding and posting this. For folks who now or later are going to have a combination of Tesla and J-1772 plugs, this will be useful, especially if they do not have a home service capacity for two circuit breakers and do not want to be going back and forth with individual adapters.

What is bizarre abuiut the BMW one, their “Mailbox,” is that while the BMW can accept 48 actual amps entering/charging up the car, yet the Mailbox only can serve up 40A — meaning it takes about an extra hour to fully charge a depleted iQ battery compared to what the car could easily take if one use this Tesla one, a ChargePoint 60A rated one, etc.

This is very interesting. Clearly, Tesla is moving very fast on the business opportunities they created with NACS standardization. This has instantly become THE home charger to get for everyone in the US. I hope they’ll move as aggressively to make SuperChargers the default DC chargers for everyone. This will put some well-needed pressure on the current market players and accelerate the new JV charging progress.

Here’s his impressions video update as well as a link to the charger itself. $595 USD is not bad considering it can charge all vehicles.

I starred but did not finish watching the video. But from previous State of Charge videos I know the Tesla chargers are rated very highly. The previous Tesla chargers were not "Smart Chargers". Do we know if this one is? There are utility rebates to help offset cost of installing chargers for as much as $1500 provided you install an approved charger. However, Tesla chargers are not on the list, which is why I recently had a Chargepoint installed. If you are already wired it makes great sense to buy this.

Tesla's wall connectors are shit if you live in a hot climate. They regularly overheat. The current models are built to a maximum rating of 48A. The older Gen 2 units (which I have) are built to deliver 80A and have much beefier wiring that doesn't overheat at 48A. Consider yourselves warned.

I was glad that a local consumer protection company here did tests around the time I was looking for mine, and their tests showed that several of the EVSEs, including one I was recommended by a family member to get, literally stopped working during their cold weather testing (-40 weather). That included a Tesla charger gen2 with a J1772 connector; this one failed because the connector got stuck and wouldn't release from the base while the others just didn't work even though you could plug them in. They also did hot temp tests and didn't note any issues but that is not as much of a problem around here and is harder to properly simulate in a warehouse. Sure you can bring the ambient temps up by simply heating the room, but that's not the same as having hot ambient air AND the blazing hot sun beating down on your charger and cable. Back to the Tesla charger, it's a neat idea. I hope others get inspired by it. Looking at it in the video from the OP, I have some hesitation about their mechanism working well when exposed to icy conditions as I don't see it being well protected, especially given their history of skipping proper cold weather tests like with the model Y heat pump failures. |

I would consider one of these if I was in the market for a new home charger.
