Got to see the reveal of the G80 M3 competition and here is what I can say about the car... Reveal colour was Isle of Man Green (which is a stunning colour) with a brown/orangeish interior. The interior looks the same as the M8. The one shown to us was an ZF transmission which leads me to believe that all models will be available at launch. The rear of the car is basically a very aggressive version of the M340 rear with the iconic M quad exhaust tips, which this time around looks to be fitted with 3.5 to 4inch tips (98mm to 102mm) which I wish the F8x came with standard. Model shown to us had CCBs and the new Competition wheels in black which basically are the ones in spy photos that look like the evolution of the 666ms. The M3 will still have the iconic arches making the car wider and the car itself looks to be longer than my F80 CS (think of E39 M5 length but with wider arches). Now on to what I disliked, The bonnet of the car is basically the same as the M340s bonnet give or take a few changes (2 extra lines on each side) but still disappointing that they would go away from the dome on the bonnet of various gens of M3. Last but not least the famous Grille... It's there and while I feel the renderings make it look bigger than it is, for me personally I would still fancy the F80 front end over it. The gentleman presenting it told us the grille and all front aero is functional. Overall I must say that this is going to be a mixed bag in the community and that some people will still buy it and perhaps I'll get it (should there be an aftermarket bumper fix) but for now I'll be looking into the M8 if I stay with bmw...

(Forgot to mention: Wheel fitment is 19s (255tyre) in front and 20s (285tyre) in the back. Same staggered fitment as F8x CS but with the competition)

I'm trying to picture what's on display without actually seeing it. The lack of a rear spoiler throws up some flags.

In the teaser image, the G80 is a Comp (extended high-gloss shadowline). Compare that to the leaked red G80 Base above. The G80 on display has the M Technic Carbon Pack (at least partially). I'm not uncertain that the display G80 is the same one from the teaser and certain items have been swapped.

eeeh, kind of. In that photo you'd likely think that the look was closer to the Porsche GT car posted earlier in the thread - a matte plastic that's actually a different piece/part. This is just a partial paintline.

I guess I could buy my f80 - pay it off in a few more years then have the flexibility to get another car at that or higher price point
Oh, no criticism here - I am the same with my F80. Anal retentive for scratches/dents. full ppf on a lease. washed weekly in summers, garaged 100% of the time, avoid bad weather, etc.. I'm just no advocate for keeping your mileage low. You can treat your things well and with the utmost respect, but still use them for more than c&c or highway drives is all I'm referring to. Not saying that's your use case. I am very luxury good vs. appliance minded when making any sizeable purchases. If it's in 1 category, I react as you do with your things. If it's in the other, as long as it is performing its function I'm untroubled at appearances.

Not sure if this rendering is good enough either.
Wasn't a commentary on the example, per se, but in both of your provided ones those are appliques', which can be peeled off. The second one here though, is closer. How it starts mid-way down the rocker, not at a part transition. But the piece in that image is styled at the back side so it breaks away from the horizontal, and moves as a mirror image of the rear door cut line going downwards (as it goes towards the rear wheel arch).

The G80 transition line was just - pin straight. As if you dipped the car, vertically, into gloss black paint with just the lower 12-20mm. IMO the CF skirt looks weird here on the white car with black sticker giving just too many textures/colors in 3" of canvas. I think I'd have the same feel with the G80 I saw.

What I can’t understand is why then will show loads of people the car at a private event, so plenty of people have now seen one or both models... yet they won’t just release pics of it? Why do we have to wait an extra month. Makes no sense to me.

Would you agree the geometry of the side skirt doesn't lend itself to a reasonable existing example?

Its possible that is painted on that specific car, or at least appear to be. The one gloss black comp decal film I've seen on an actual F90 comp is ultra thin clear with black added to the back prior to the adhesive layer. It looks painted unless viewed close from certain angle.

yes, i agree that the angles at play, and placement of the paint line are hard to explain with existing examples.

Yes, that's quite possible that it is 'just this car', meaning the pre-prod models, but IDK how likely it is. I did get up, fingernail close, to see if it was something that could be peeled. It was not.

Yes, that's kinda annoying. I emailed BMW Poland to ask whether there are any plans for a similar event here but no answer. Funny thing is that I was more excited about the car just a few months back than now.

Showing a car to some people has really no dependencies other than a car. A world launch event comes with expectations on finalized specifications and to market plans etc.

Now as you say, what would the harm be letting these VIP people snap some pictures or release some of your own? Beats me...there’s still all of the specifications left to not deflate the launch IMO.

Went there today too.

Isle of Man green and kyalami orange interior (like a nice pumpkin tint) on what is M3 Competition with additional optional carbon fiber parts on lower intake between the brake duct and now confirmed bug tooth grille. Carbon rear trunk lip. lower diffuser and mirrors. It was an empty early afternoon so it was just me looking at car with a BMW personnel with me. He said the Kyalami interior is likely to be individual but couldn't say on the green. The white render on BMWBLOG is 98% accurate, I MS paint edited the side badge as I remember it looked. The kidneys had a piano black trim around it

Standing next the car looked and felt huge. Very wide rear and the rear flaired was seamless. The active radar is offset on lower driver side kidney as prototypes and laserlight installed. Camera zit between the kidneys. M3 competition badge on side front fenders but no tag on the rear.

If you got a drone you could mission impossible a shot or you can just wait til 9/23 when its official to public.

Frankly it looked pretty mean looking. Just needs a rollcage and you'd think its a cup car. Its very in your face and now everybody will know there's something different about this M3

Yes, they know they have a real issue and this is part of a reveal strategy that hopes to create "ambassadors" for the new look.

I can't get on with the look and I love the big grilles on the 7er....

We've all seen the new 4er and some flares and side skirts isn't going to change that front end....

good pull on the 2nd photo there - you see the line clearly on the inside surface of the wheel well.

I don't know what your poking and poking at, and now commenting about clearing baffles. I'm lost with ya, but the impression of what I saw, and touched, first-hand, are what they are. It wasn't a sticker.

So much for social distancing

I'm surprised BMW ///M didn't hack the event and bring it live to the entire world instead

I had to take a moment to think (clearing the baffles).

You're correct, it is painted, just as the M850i Golden Thunder Edition above is painted (they aren't decals). M GmbH has a new large format laser ablation and coloring system to provide a broader range of finish options on request.

Ha- yes at Monticello. You came into the tent (which had a lot of room to get all around the M4) so you see the back first. I was surprised that the front of the M4 is not as hideous as I was expecting but the black shadowline on Sao Paolo Yellow. The interior seats with matching Sao Paolo Yellow and blue striping reminded me of a wetsuit I used to own.
