There is no real "last classic." Classics are made constantly. Every generation has a fan group that consider that model to be a "classic."

Imagine that the new upcoming G80 M3 launched today. There's going to be a 15 year old kid who will love it and will dream of owning one someday. Fast forward 10-15 years, that kid worked hard and has enough money to buy an M3 of his own. The G80 M3 he fell in love with 15 years earlier will be considered by them a "classic"

It's all relative, and a classic is made every single day
I'm a late comer to the BMW world. Having said that, I first fell in love with BMW when I was 9-years old. My cousin had purchased a brand new 1975 green 2002 Bavaria with the elongated bumper bars.

It was love at first sight. It was the most amazing car I ever seen.

My first BMW purchase was a brand new M235 which took me back to that 2002, the way my cousin drove it, the way it ripped through the roads as if they were jelly.

The M235 was agile and nimble. It felt every bit the 2002 I remembered, so much so that I signed up for a M2CS in February 2018.

I purchased a new 4 series last September but it was stolen last week. My next daily driver will be a BMW and hopefully the one after that.

I concur with everything you have so eloquently outlined because I'm a living example of it.

I buy BMW because it's BMW, not because the grill looks right or the exhaust is in the right place.

I buy BMW because the child in me has yearned for it since 1975.

And yes, I do believe the M2CS will be a classic lol

I was ready to say that, I'm sure I did 6 years ago, jesus christ though, these new cars have a face only a mother could love.

When the F80 came out I was first in line to drive one, and got a 2015. I was coming off a 6 year stint with an E90 M3, and about the only design element I didn’t like on the F8x was the hood line/lack of seamless integration with the grilles. But that was it.

On this new one, let’s just say I’m not lining up to buy one. First time ever this happened since my first E36 M3. How can this be a good thing for BMW I don’t know.

I'm no expert on exhaust by any means but wouldn't this be better from a functionality standpoint? The piping now can go straight back without needing to go through the bends of a traditional split muffler set up. Wouldn't this be an improvement?

I don't mind big rear wing for racecar purposes but the crazy exhaust makes it look a bit over the top ... fake exotic kinda look. love the M3s but the stacked exhaust is a bit much ... I think I don't like the way its designed into bumper which is probably part of it...

however ... I am interested in an aggressive M3 that would be well suited for track days and have a bit of drama to it. G80 was good but lacked drama. As long as the sound and performance keeps up with the aggressive (despite jury being out) looks, I still may find my way into one.

The G80 we saw was on Mperformance wheels. Nice basket weave style wheels in black on one side and gold on the other. Tires were 285/295 and 20/21 inch. Forgot to check the aspect ratios.

G80 was nice! Isle of man green is kinda tealish and has a 90s vibe. Front is not as bad as it looks in pics. The comp+carbon packages make the exterior nice with no real need to upgrade aero parts (maybe an agresive lip and swaping some gloss black bits for CF). Rear spoiler is CS style but normal M2/3/4 size.

The new CF bucket seat is quite flashy. The whole rear shell is CF. The belt holes are metal look plastic (felt a bit cheap actually). There is a hump with a CF trim piece between your legs at the front of the seat cushion that keeps your legs "locked in" from both sides. Car was off so could not play with the adjustment but the hold of the seats is way better than the F8X seats (reminds me of Recaro Sportster CSs). This is coming from a small guy.

It has new CF paddles that look a bit like the more "aggressive" aftermarket ones. They are longer than B4 so you can operate them with your hand on the bottom of the wheel. Paddles are thin CF backed with a texturised red rubber/silicone coating. Reminded me of a fancy basketball shoe.

The steering wheel is the same as all the M5 except that it had CF where the M5 has that brushes silver.

The roof has two pronounced ridges in it. Not sure if these are some kind of vortex generators.

The exahst tips are massive, they just failed the fist test. Backbox is also massive but more tucked than the M2C.

For the track bros

The brake fluid reservoir is accesible without tools! Turn a latch and you can lift a cover and see the reservoir.

The car comes with brake cooling ducts that lead air from between the coolers to the front wheel arches.

In some places the rads have a 2nd grilljust ahead of the rads with a finer mesh structure to prevent damage to the rads! (kinda like the CSF guard). I track my M2C and the big open grills mean the rads take a battering.

The strut brace is not CF but steel and it no longer ties into the A-pilar as on the F80/F82/F83. The strut top reinforcement are chunky and the aftermarket is likely going to have a real pain making camber plates for it.

It also has an S55 like intake, without that intake that is built into the engine cover like on the X3/4M.

An oil change will likely require the removal of the strut brace as the filter is at the back of the engine and covered by the engine cover which is under the strut brace.

Yeah but the e92 to f80 where small gripes (headlights touching grille, hood line, size, losing the V8). The g80 is genuinely an ugly car. At random over the last few weeks I've been showing pictures of it to people (non car people) asking if they thought it was a good looking car. I got mostly no. A few yes and even I'll admit, I can very much admire the car from the rear quarter panel view. But the front is awful. Not because of a new huge grille. It's just... bad. It has no flow or cohesiveness with the rest of the car and it's just big and stand out for no reason other than to make a scene. It's just ugly. If the g80 had the g20 front end, honestly I would just be here complaining about my old man stuff like "the cars too big" and "adding awd takes away its enthusiastic soul" yanno, crap like that. All stuff I can get over with just experiencing what I'm sure is going to be a great driving car. But I cannot get over that design.

So gone are the times when M Performance parts made the car look better. I'd hope BMW offers normal M Performance parts in addition to that Fast & Furious edition.

I wish they would make actual performance parts like tunes, real suspension and aero upgrades, and maybe even a 4-6 point harness that safely works with the new bucket seat.
