A few pictures I took today from Shanghai International Auto Show. The M4 Competition wears full M performance parts including the exhaust.

Impression:

1. The car/grille do NOT look better in person. But, the car definately has the strong and authoritative presence with it, screaming special in an in-your-face fashion. I think those who think it does, do not hate the grille that much in the first place.

2. As opposed to the prevailing wisdom, KO Interior works very well with Toronto Red Exterior. Orange/Red (TR is quite orange) + Orange must be tacky or something. But turns out, the KO interior just has the correct amount of black part to work with the whole thing. I came to conclusion right away for the guys that want TR that the KO is the best interior option if you want something more than black in the cabin. The Silver Stone however from the M3 next to it is a bit pedestrain in comparison.

3. What's really tacky is the M Performance body parts. The lip is ok, but maybe I'm getting old already, the side skirt, rear bumper "cover" and rear wing are too much. The center mounted exhaust, I thought was ok from early pictures, but in real world Civic Type R is where it belongs. Maybe BMW is trying too hard to distract everyone from the grille.

4. The M3 in Brooklyn Grey is significantly taller, especially when sitting next to the M4. However, all the attentions instantly go to the face/grille, the rest of the car isn't all that noticeable.

5. For those with old Ms, make no mistake, the new M3/M4 is big, inside and out. It's the same wheelbase as the old M6 and similar length. I've already gotten used to big BMWs, commuting a 540Li (China Lengthened Version) for 3 years, and small cars (M2 for 5 years and F82/E90 M3s for even longer). I'm less frustrated in this regard.

I must have those 1000 M wheels!! Whatever exterior I end up getting, it will need to match those wheels.

Ha ha ha the fingerprints on the console. Not a fan of the M performance body kit and exhaust. Looks like it was designed by Mugen.

I must have the Gold-Bronze finish of the 1000M wheels. I'll get it powder-coated onto the 826M wheels and I think that'll look better and be the "right" size for the car in the 20/19 inch setup.

Hmm... my main gripe with the 826M wheels is the color- both colors. I'd be very interested in seeing it powder-coated the gold-bronze finish. Thanks for the idea!

Agreed! The wheels are hands down the best part of that build

Nice photos of all the MP items.

The M3 seems to have all the MP parts as well

Anymore photos of the M3?

I like the red/gold combination. Reminds me a little of the Ferrari F1 cars from years ago.

However that Performance exhaust is just hideous in my opinion

Wheel is beautiful, a darker and IMO a better shade of gold than the 763M of last gen. Not sure about 20/21 setup though, especially 21 on the rear.

Unfortunately the other M3 pictures I took weren't really good quality. One thing for sure the M4 in red steal the show...

Yes, Red/Gold is a winner.

Neither can I. I also think it was an odd choice to make it so aggressive and require different body work to fit the exhaust. Seems like there was a fair amount of uptake on the previous gen performance exhaust and I'd guess this model would have been no different if they hade made it a simple bolt on to an otherwise stock car.

Front splitter is a must. ($2500 steep but worth it)

Those rear diffuser pieces that are behind the back wheels look phenomenal from the rear view if you're driving behind the car. $1000 each is probably too steep.

The wheels are gorgeous.

Exhaust is no good.

Why did they put a bookshelf on the ear end behind the rear wheels???

And though the car is bigger, I found that entering the back seat of the M3 can require a bit of technique, especially if you're over 5'8'

You guys have it all wrong about the exhaust, it's a home run since nobody is going to bitch about the hideous nostril grill on this particular M4.

I'm more impressed that the auto show is back

While in Canada I can't even buy diapers in Walmart because they are not essential
