Only reason why the soft top is popular is due to the look. It is next to impossible to tell to 99.9% of people if that 4 series is a hard top versus a convertible (speaking of last gen 4 series or 3 series for that matter) and the .1% being us would have to look closely for the lining for the hard top versus the coupe.
I like the soft top look. I have it myself. However, I think a hard top convertible is a great look too for people like me who appreciate the subtle details of how it is different than the coupe with the top up. Cool to have a coupe look year round I will say. Most people just want to show off that they spent more money on a convertible versus a coupe it seems and a soft top shows it off. However, the hard top is better for performance in regards to aerodynamics at higher speeds (top up of course) and it is so much easier to maintain. Most people ruin their soft tops since they don't know or spend the money/time to maintain them. The next biggest thing as to why soft tops are popular is they are much cheaper to build and bmw charges the more for the convertible even though it is cheaper and cheaper for them to make. |

For the love of Munich & everything that has 6 cylinders in a line that thing is ugly! I personally feel that one of the only cars that can pull off the soft top is the 911. I really liked the F83 & E93 all things considered.

I don't buy that, the added weight up top and the much higher center of gravity for the hard top will eat up (and then some more) all the aerodynamics advantages.

Soft tops can be quieter, more aerodynamic, definitely less weight, lower collision related repair costs, mechanical repair costs and equally important is the storage space. Hard tops eat up most of the trunk space, which I think most people care about more than what it's made out of. IMO most convertible owners only really care about how the car looks with the top down.

The 8 series forum has been ogling over the Lexus LC design lately. Not a ton of room in the rear, but that side profile just looks correct: https://f92.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1761145

Just went through dealer training on the G22 and learned that the roof itself is honeycomb shaped carbon fiber sandwiched between some layers of fabric.
Seems not to be very well known but it should be! |

Hmmm. I've owned the same cloth-top convertible for 9ish years and do absolutely nothing to the top and it's fine. In my experience, modern cloth convertible tops don't need much maintenance.

I've wanted an m4 for years, but the trunk situation was a literal deal-breaker for me. I ended up buying an Audi specifically because of the soft top. |

This new generation seems so good dynamically, it's a shame they won't make it with a Manual, the enjoyment of rowing your own gears with the wind flowing around you..
I guess they don't think buyers want it..
