You are one of the lucky ones I guess. Seems like it's very common on the G80 platform and there has yet to be any sort of service bulletin or known cause

I have heard this recently, also when it got a bit colder, 25-35 degrees. Never heard it on my 2021 G80 M3, but my 2022 G80 M3X has it.

My friend used to have a 2022 M4, never had the issue. Mine is a 2023 M3, has the problem. Parts are all the same so not sure if it's just luck of the draw or what.

I started it a few times this week in the 20 degree F region and sometimes made zero sound, others it squealed. Humidity possibly a factor?

I reached back out to my local BMW as it has been doing it pretty often lately. They are doing some research before having me bring the car back out.

January 2023, BMW engineering told them to remove the belt and start the car to verify it is coming from a pulley, which it did eliminate the sound. They replaced my belt and belt tensioner then but that did not fix it. I am thinking it’s the lower idler pulley as I have read elsewhere on a X3M/X4M that it seemed to fix it. It’s down towards the bottom if you look at an S58 engine diagram.

If/when I bring it in this time, I am hoping they can get clearance to replace the idler pulley. It’s almost like trial and error hanging parts at this point! I will report back any update

I also work in the car business but my dealer is nothing but great with me! With warranty work, it is not really a factor of the dealer not listening but they have to take certain steps in diagnosing, videoing for sounds etc. If they cannot replicate it for BMW North America, they really don't have a case to fight for you. Replicating this issue has been the most difficult part. Once it warms up, it's pretty much gone for the warm season.

I am hoping if enough bring this in, it will become a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) so more can get this easily fixed and no more of the trial and error.

Mine did this when below 30°F, even with 500 miles on it. I wouldn't worry about it honestly.

It doesn't sound normal as other BMW's don't seem to do this. Not even all S58 motors seem to do it. Something needs to be dug into on the engineering side

I am dropping mine off this weekend since temperatures are dropping again, I am hoping it lets out the scream Monday morning. Hoping this is the time something gets diagnosed!

Yup mine is stock as well, followed everything to a T. I also just uploaded a YT video here: Watch until the end when the RPM's drop and the sound follows with the RPM's.

I have read of X3M's and also G87 M2's having the same thing. It seems most with this issue have either written it off as normal and given up, or their service department was not very diligent in addressing it.

My service center has been awesome in attempting to diagnose it. If your dealer tries to tell you its the belt and/or tensioner, that is not going to fix the issue. Been there already lol

Can confirm the tensioner alone did NOT repair this. I am taking mine in a few days, hoping BMW does the idler pulley! I am in the car business, fairly confident in it being that pulley. It sounds as if the bearing is not packed with enough grease or something along those lines.

Update on my car: I send a video to my dealer of the noise and just dropped it off Saturday night. It sat until today, Monday morning and they were able to replicate the sound briefly and submit it to BMW Engineering, they are currently awaiting guidance from them on what to do. I am predicting idler pulley is going to be targeted at some point as they have record of my tensioner already being replaced last year.

They may try to replicate it again over the next few days but atleast have something to submit over already. Will circle back here with an update. Hoping this becomes a TSB eventually for those who have had to deal with this

Hey guys, been following this thread. I agree with OP that this may be related to the idler pulley. I have another thread talking about the issue. I live in a dry desert so I hardly noticed a whine or have it cold enough to replicate the issue upon start up. However, recently we had a few rain showers which brought in humidity. While in idle this noise or a similar noise occurred. Fast forward a week or two the weather completely drys up and warms. With this the noise completely disappears. Again, last week we get another shower of rain and humidity has been hovering around the 50% range here. The sound returns.
Here are the sounds mine make. Again no codes are thrown or any issues with the car being brought up to operational temperature. It does sound like idler pulley may be improperly grease packed.
https://files.fm/f/ak5fxm46bq
https://files.fm/f/utydgsbhaz
These are the two separate occurrences that I recorded!
