I ran Motul 8100 X-Cess (5W-40) in my N55 M2 which was running PureStage 2 Hybrid Turbos and producing over 500 hp to the wheels. Never had an issue in my 5 years of ownerships and my oil changes were done every ~4500 miles. Pretty excessive but cheap peace of mind and insurance.

My G80 M3 is due to be delivered in the next couple weeks and my plan is to run the same oil and do the same interval changes. I know recommended spec by BMW for the S58 is 0W-30. Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen 2is available in 5W-40. This shouldn't be a problem for those who are in hot climates or who only drive their vehicle in spring, summer and fall. I have seen a lot of these threads and seems a lot of people recommend this specific oil and weight and haven't been having any issues.

LiquiMoly is marketing junk.

Motul is great quality regardless, and the Specific line matches OEM specs.

BMW TPT is very high quality oil.

I ran LiquiMoly for a while on the S4 engine and it was OK. Been on 5-40 excess gen2 for a while and it passed 200k. Motul makes good stuff, I like it more.

Motul 8100 X-cess gen2 5W-40 is my favorite for “some track”. It has a great additive package allowing track/highway and street/city use. Change every 5K.

Motul 300V Power 5W-30 is my favorite for “all race”. Change at 2K OCI max, since racing oil has little additives.

So Motul is great because they have a line that matches the BMW specs for oil, but LiquiMoly is marketing junk even though they also have a line that matches the BMW specs for oil?

I wish people would just say they like a certain brand instead of insulting something without any evidence.

An excellent quality oil will perform well at the end of the OCI, so if you're going for 10k mile oil changes, that's important. Overpaying for that oil compared to the BMW oil or Liqui Moly makes sense. If you're replacing the oil every 4-5k miles, any oil meeting the spec is going to be virtually the same. Anyone with actual evidence to the contrary is welcome to share it.

I'll be changing my oil soon and sending my motul specific ll-01-fe 0w30 sample off for analysis, already did the bmw oil analysis which i posted here. Should be able to see if the motul oil thinned out as much as the bmw oil with my short drives.

No, I don’t just like something and say it’s better. There’s an oil thread (a few actually) on the F8X engine forum where we’ve had very long and detailed discussions with one of our forum members who happens to be an oil test engineer. He has commented on all brands regarding quality of base stocks (or garbage), additive packages, shear and other oil attributes, and use cases. He doesn’t just comment on a brand, but gets into details on many of the engine oils compatible with our S55/58 engines. I learn from him and spread his wisdom. That’s why I stay away from Liqui-Moly, even their LL-01 FE. Other better oils are available.

Liquimoly are quite overpriced for what they are worth. The only Liquimoly engine oil that I like is the High-Tech 5w40. It's a lightweight oil that is as light as most 0w40s but it's marketing gimmick saying that the oil is good for up to 40k kms is bogus. And then again for a cheaper price, you can get superior oils like Mobil 1 0w40 (factory fill in Nissan GTRs, AMG GTRs and Porsche GT3/3RS). I personally run Penrite 0w40 Ten Tenths Premium. S55s were originally specc'ed with M TwinPower 0w40 which had viscosity ratings virtually identical to Mobil 1 0w40 but noticeably more thinner than PPE/SHU 5w40. So from that same logic, I believe the S58 can run 0w40 as well if you can get a high quality oil that runs those exact same specs as the discontinued M Twin Power 0w40. The only Porsche A40/Merc 229.5 certified oils on the market that have similar viscosities to the M TwinPower 0w40 are the Liquimoly High Tech 5w40, Mobil 1 0w40, Castrol 0w40 and Valvoline 0w40. The Penrite i'm running is a tad thinner at 40 degrees celsius but that is better for start up flow and wear protection

^^^ The irony of this post is that just yesterday I was thinking that when I went from Mobil 1 0-40 to the 5-40 LiquiMoly on the S4 years ago, I felt like not much improved, if anything. I was marginally better, but not much, so why pay more at that point. Honestly, plenty of places online that sell the big jugs of Motul for what I think is a reasonable price. $36 isn’t a lot to pay for them. Buy two and you have some left over for the next oil change. That’s cheap for the oil you get.

Because that’s been my experience so far when comparing Motul’s 5-40 oil to ANY other oil on the market so far. What’s one more OEM branded oil on the list?… especially when it’s piss 0-30. No way am I banging my engine to redline on that shit for 200k hard driven miles like I have on my S4. I don’t trust it.

And that 5-30 would only be run in the S58 just initially to see what’s up with it and satisfy the dealership nazis if they bitched about a non FE cert’d oil, which the 5-40 isn’t.
