Emotionally, the E90(92) was the most special due to that crazy V8.

Technically, the G80 because it's the fastest and most comfortable.

And that's why I own both.

Two completely different experiences, but both thrilling in their own right.

The S58 is an excellent motor in stock form and a monster once tuned, and there are no known fatal flaws (yet).

That being said I don’t think it’s fair to compare multiple generations of M3’s to each other and call one better than the other. Instead if you compare each generation to their competitors of the same era, BMW M cars always come out on top.
Well said.

The E46 was probably the best platform, and the M3 iteration is surely a great car, well balanced, great engine. It also had subframe issues, bearing issues and the interior "soft touch" doesn't hold up well. Probably the best looking as well.

The G8x is the best platform overall, the fastest, most comfortable, best technology, and hopefully the most reliable. It's hard to argue with progress.

I’m truly speaking from experience and I can honestly say the G80M3 platform is the best M3 yet! It definitely wasn’t my favorite looking platform at first but it really grew on me and what once was hideous is now epic lol.

I'm saying the F8x gen should be included in the poll. This is what I see, the F8x gen is missing.

I’ve owned an E46 M3 and driven other E46s too and they are awesome. But ever since I bought the F80, I cannot deny that it’s just a special feeling car. More special than any E46 I have ever been in and that just how I personally feel. I think thr F80 is most definitely the most underrated and I think is the best looking M3.

It’s the e30 first, and the G80 slightly behind. Both very different cars.

The others lag far behind.

The E46 is what started my love affair with BMW and M3s, even though I never got to own one. It will always have the nostalgia tied to it for me and I still love the way it looks today.

I’ve driven an E46, E90, and F80 but never for a long duration of time. The G80 was the first M3 I’ve been able to buy and absolutely love it.

All that being said and disregarding nostalgia, I’d say the G80 is the best. Overall right mix of everyday usability along with excellent performance capability.

I have had an E30, 3E36, 3E46, 2F9X, F80 and G80. I still have the E36, F80 and G80, but I have to say the E36 is still the most fun car to drive (for me)

Best will always be new. Rest just haters. Ive had every or driven for month or over every generation. Each version is a vast improvement in every way, cost aside.

But i kept an E46…

E92 was least favorite.

E30 - best for collecting. The chassis is as stiff as a wet noodle.
E36 - best for AutoX.
E46 - best for ”old school”
E90 - best V8, because it was the only V8
F80 - conveniently not listed in your poll
G80 - best all rounder, best in its class
Brilliant

I wanted to ask the same question

Why no F80? The G80 is probably the most balanced and best "at everything" out of the list. But the F80, and I know this will be blasphemous to some, might be the best looking of them all.

Anyone that complains not being able to manage the grip of an F80 are just not meant to drive it. Unfortunately that’s just a skill issue.

The year was 2001. I just traded in my 01 Dinan'd out 330CI for a a new E46 M3 with 15K mark up. I didn't care, I was 24 years old. I was never a straight line speed guy, but rather appreciated cornering, and steering feel.

Taking out the M3 on my favorite twisty roads (9/35) if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area - rowing gears and feeling the unbelievable steering and chassis communication, and the song of the i6 - I was in absolute driving bliss!

Since then, i've foolishly sold the car, grown up, had a family and still helplessly chasing that same feeling the E46 gave me.

To ME - that was the best M3 i've ever owned. I wish I could get that feeling back again, but I realize driving a performance car in your 40s with kids at home is much different than the care free days in your 20s.

I've never driven any iteration of the M2, but would love to. I just can't do coupes right now because of 2 young kids. I had a 911 when I had 1 kid and I just didn't feel right getting a car that I could not enjoy comfortably with the family - probably the same reason why I haven't gotten a GTR either - the R34 is my absolute favorite car, and had so many chances to buy one (R35), but passed up each time because of practicality reasons..
