Break in service at 6k miles

Hi all, I recently purchased a used 2022 g82 M4. I did some research on the service history for the vehicle. In my research I have found that the break in service for the vehicle was done at 6000 miles. Should I be worried? From the research and videos I have come across it is a service that should have been handled at 1300 miles or am I under some sort of misunderstanding?

How many miles were on the car when you bought it? Did you purchase it Certified Used? I'm under the impression, (and I dont know much) that there could be significant factory warranty issues with a break in service that didnt get done until 6k miles. The original break in oil, was not meant to be taken much past the 1,200 mile break in.

As long as its not burning oil, I would not worry about.

Who knows, maybe the the owner did the first service himself. Or took it to an independent. Or maybe the records are just wrong.

FYI, if you’re using CARFAX to look up the service history and you see the first one at 5kish, that doesn’t necessarily mean it was done at 1200. The dash should have prompted the owner to go in. That said, I’ve seen several CARFAXES with this first service missing. You need to look and see where it was bought and where it was first serviced and call that dealership and ask for the history early on. It should be in their systems… that is if you can just go into your local dealer and ask them to pull the actual BMW service log and NOT the CARFAX shit, which can be wrong.

Yes, get the actual service records from a dealer. My dealer was surprisingly insistent about my getting the break-in service done at or just before 1200 miles. Hopefully a failure to do so is not a warranty-level issue.

I have 20,xxx miles. I did call the original bmw location(the one listed on the vehicles drive) to ask for service log. They are the ones that told me the brake in service was handled there. The person I was speaking to said it was normal even after I expressed that my research told me otherwise. Also thanks to all for quick helpful responses. I am new to forum just got my car delivered yesterday. Super impressed with how quick I got a response!

Just got an update! Spoke to the actual dealership that the car was sold from. Spoke to a service tech. Break in service is recommended at 12-1300 miles. Does not have to be done at that point. 6000 is a little later than when most people will take it in but I happens and is nothing “ground breaking”. All warranties are still good including the maintenance warranty that is still good through October of this year.

I forgot all about the slick title of the video. I wasn't even referring to that. It was more about the information included in the video, about the viscosity of the "break-in oil." Sorry for the confusion.

I wouldn't really trust what the dealer says tbh.

There's always the talk floating around that BMW will void warranties if you do break-in an unreasonable amount past 1200. I would say 6000 miles is unreasonable.

I would get confirmation from BMW directly that you'll have no issues. They're the ones who approve warranty work, not the dealer.

There were several months where the diff oil was unavailable and dealers were getting approval to push out the break in service. This may be the reason you see the delay in the service records with no complaints.

Thanks all. Have some recalls I came across while talking to the bmw service people. Taking it in Monday next week. Will find out more then and will post an update Incase anyone might find themselves in the same predicament. While I’m at it never had a rwd car this fast before, and have yet to mash the gas pedal. Will DSC be reliable enough to keep a noob sports car driver safe? For reference I’m coming from a Lexus gs350.

Keep TC/DSC on until you get used to the car. Don't go from babying it straight to full throttle, gradually increase how much of the car's capabilities you are using. When you feel confident, play on roads you know vs. roads that might have hazards or issues you aren't expecting. Put the tire temp display up while you get used to the car and learn how the car responds with cold tires, warm tires, and hot tires.

When you're used to the car, play with MDM a bit. Never fool yourself into thinking you're in a Fast/Furious movie.

Above all, be honest with yourself about your driving abilities. False boasting doesn't matter on forums, but it can kill people on the roads.

I agree. If his break in wasn’t done “on time” I’m going to go out in a limb and say the power train warranty is void. 6000 is WAY past normal break in oil and diff oil changes.

You can either put it as a tile on your home screen, or on the steering wheel, you have a "menu" button on the right, click that, then scroll up to the wheel looking icon, that'll show tire pressure and temps.

As others have said, the viscosity of the break in oil is lower, gear and engine. Also there might have been metal in there. Likely you'll be fine, but I would not be taking this risk without something in writing.

Also as said, I would just make sure BMW themselves states that you are fine, do not accept dealers talk. If BMW denies an engine warranty, the dealer is not going to pay out of pocket to keep their "word".

The "BC" button on the left-hand stalk will scroll through center gauge cluster options for the right side of the cluster. The left side of the cluster is set in the iDrive menu.

Having owned many turbocharged engines, a first service at 6,000 miles would be a deal breaker for me if I intended to own the vehicle for any length of time. Especially on a car that tends to be road hard. You wonder what the oil level was when they dropped it.

I ran into the differential oil shortage and had to bring my car back, luckily, just a week later. That BMW doesn't authorize a substitute like AMSOIL is just stupid.
