Today I had a near death experience. I installed the Fuel-It flex fuel kit, without any trouble. However, when I turned the M4 on the e85 display on the JB4 was not moving at all. Good news is the Fuel-It app detected ethanol content, 9% to be precise (93 octane Shell gas).
I tried to figure out what the reason for the e85 sensor not communicating with the JB4 (checked the pin installation on the #4 pin, and it was secured). Now the rollercoaster of emotions begin. I decided to update the firmware of the JB4, but had a hicup and it didn’t do the install, but rather erased the old data and stopped communicating with my phone. After that, I tried to turn on the car and got a “Drivetrain Malfunction error”. Tried that a couple of times and the car won’t remain turn on, but rather tried to start. I waited 10 minutes, just to chill for a bit (while I browsed the net for information). I decided to link the JB4 again and it finally connected and I was able to download the software update. After a successful firmware update, I tried to turn the car on, but the same thing happened, it won’t start. At this point, I decided to delete the codes the car had (it was several). After deleting them, the car was able to start like nothing happened. I am still not able to see ethanol reading on the JB4, but at least it shows on the Fuel-It app. Just wanted to share my experience, in the event someone else gets the same scenario. |

In the Jb4 app go to settings, advanced, wmi, then ethanol settings. I believe you need to toggle ‘bit 1’.

Total baseless BS. Don't listen to this guy. Nobody who actually has used both JB4 and Racechip would suggest Racechip is better. Piggybacks are limited in what they can do, but if that's the direction you are going, JB4 is the winner, no question.

given that you only have 2 posts, I'm not sure if you are serious or trolling but the data is strongly against you in this case. I cant think of a single instance where the Jb4 messed up an S58 engine.

Did that. Was hoping to get it looked at before a road trip today.

Put my car on a mustang dyno and got some dissapointing numbers. (Still a lot of power, but my expectations were higher).
Current mods: -Evolution Racewerks high flow cats -Valvetrinic exhaust -MST intakes -JB4 map 2 -Other irrelevant to power mods Maybe my expectations were too high, but 540whp. I was thinking 600whp. I do have throttle cut issues, timing issues, and afr was a little off (according to the dyno guy). Anyone else on here throw the car on the dyno with similar mods and get a different number? I’m contemplating going the FEMTO and BM3 route after this. My goal, longer term, is 700-750whp. |

Your answer resides in your last two paragraphs. My personal opinion is that piggybacks suck ass, no matter how advanced they wanna try and be. They will never be as close to full and proper control that the cars own ECU will do once reflashed. People can disagree with this all they want and say they run this or that, but I have never seen a piggyback car on any platform that was set it and forget it day in and day out over and over again reproducible results without having to fuck with it or deal with problems. In the other hand, a properly tuned and flashed ECU/TCU combo will drive like a car with more power from the factory. Doesn’t matter the weather, elevation, all that shit adjusts accordingly from existing logic and parameters within the factory ECU, you just drive and enjoy the car. Every single car I have had, outside of one in the 90’s which was standalone since flashing wasn’t available, has been ECU flashed and they’ve all been driven over 100k miles and been bulletproof. On newer platforms, don’t overlook the importance of TCU flashing as well because some manufacturers will control torque transfer and power output from the engine with conditional checks within the TCU, so those have to match up to remove some torque limits in the calibrations.
My suggestion is to sell that piggyback and do it right, by utilizing a flash for both the ECU and TCU and be done with it. Good news is, TCU flashing is simpler on this platform and doesn’t require any expensive unlocking. Good luck. |

Thanks for the replies. I understand about the baseline, I did not get those. I was unaware of the place that has the dyno when I got the car. I’ve saw somewhere, people with stock M3C X were getting in the 490-500whp. I’m not stuck on the number, bc in the end the number is really only bragging rights, which I don’t care to do. I was just thinking it would be a little more power. Regardless it’s an amazing and fun car that only comes out of the garage once or twice a week. I’m not bringing it to the track or racing people.

I love how everyone is bringing up baseline numbers and delta gains when the below was included as part of his original post. 🙄 It doesn’t matter how much power he makes if he’s got those kinds of issues with the junk JB4, fighting what the ECU is trying to keep inline.

safe depends on your fuel
You can use map 1 or map 2 with 91 and 93, the only exception in my opinion, is 91 ACN. in this case, i recommend data logging before using map 2
