Cross Country Move

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey everyone,

I am moving next week from the crappy roads of Michigan to Sunny SE Florida and will be towing the G80 on a Uhual car trailer behind the Uhual.

Question is, what's the best way to secure the vehicle to the trailer without damaging any of the vehicle for the 1300 miles?

*This will be a flat bed Uhual carrier and not those 2 wheel dollies.

Thanks,

Jayson

There is another thread on this as pointed out, but I would add to your question that the Uhaul trailer has two front wheel "harnesses" that secure the vehicle. No further straps are required. I brought some extra ones with me but they weren't needed. There are a few videos on the Uhaul website that detail the process of securing the car to their trailer.

You can't leave me in this horrible weather state lol. Congrats on going to a place where you can enjoy your car year round on good roads. This year in Michigan has been brutal weather wise for me. seems were getting about 3 to 4 months a year of good weather anymore. Good luck on your move and hauling of your car.

One more thing I forgot to mention:

The Uhaul flatbed has two “emergency” chains that they recommend attaching to the vehicle. I let the staff attach them to the vehicle with a watchful eye. The rear chain ended up being wrapped around the suspension link (my term, not sure if that is correct), and the front was wrapped around some part of axle as I recall (can’t remember exactly). In both cases, a) I wasn’t entirely stoked to have those chains hanging off the car undercarriage for the trip as even just the motion of the trailer could cause wear/friction, and b) obviously in the unlikely event of an “emergency” where the front wheel tie downs failed, the chains could do untold damage to the vehicle trying to keep it secured to the trailer.

I checked everything out carefully after the trip and things looked fine. However, you may want to consider alternate “emergency” measures to tie down the vehicle and avoid using bare chains strung under the car. I’m sure there are better guys in this forum who could recommend options. Maybe some ratchet tie-down straps on the rear wheels would work?

I trailered both my E90 and F80 with no issues, both cross country moves.

You wouldn't attach them to the tow hooks?

I vote for shipping as well. It's a long drive, the trailer adds more stress to your trip - which is not a roadtrip to enjoy but you are trying to get from point A to B as fast as possible.

On the front bumper and have the chain banging against the front of the car?

Congrats on the move, OP. I've trailered many cars of 4 wheel trailers, while I was on active duty. I've never had a problem. Michigan to Florida, is a life changer, in more than just weather.

I live in California, but my son does live in Boynton Beach. The chances of my car ever being in Florida, are slim, slim to none. Unless I give it to my son.
