Great video at the bottom of the post which reminded me of this.

There's an amazing bit of folklore here in Sydney, which is entirely true. A local guy bought one. Servicing was at a BMW dealer. One of the techs decided he'd take it for a "test drive". He pretty much wrote it off. Well any other car would be written off, but he inflicted a mere $1m worth of damage which is somewhat less than the car's value.

I saw the photos when it happened, published in the local paper. It was on a stretch of road near me which I enjoy rather a lot. I'll never forget that story. Nor the photos.

I always thought it was my local dealer that did the deed, not BMW Sydney. This would make a lot more sense given where the owner lived and the crash location. I'll have to ask them next service.

Crazy. We should all be so lucky to at least crash an F1 in our lives, let alone own one.

Can we please have more of these unwanted necessities?!

The F1 is still one of the best looking McLaren of all time, only second in line to the M6GT.

Anyone who debates that this ISN'T the greatest production car of all time is out of their minds.

The pinnacle of automotive achievement.

Great video behind the story on these cars. I found the story about the 911 GT1 particularly interesting. I always enjoy Henry Catchpole and his commentary.

I’ll bite. It handles like crap is what people say.

It does some things incredibly well (acceleration, engine response, uniqueness), and others not so well (turning, stopping). Hence, not the pinnacle in my book. Personally I think I might enjoy an F50 or a CGT more due to the open air element.

I’ve seen that exact car driving in South Melbourne, on my commute home from work about 10 years ago. Amazing to see one just trundling along in peak hour traffic. Have also seen it on display a couple of times at car shows and things, but that’s not half as amazing.

I mean, it won LeMans with a detuned engine.

Great race car in that case.

But probably not with the same suspension.

I've been in the porsche community for a long time and nearly everyone I've spoken to has said the Mclaren F1 is their top performance car of all time. I've gotten some 959's, some F40's and some Miura's. But the overwhelming support and love of the F1 is apparent.
