Gap insurance will cover the difference between the car's value and its payoff amount in the event that you owe more on it than it's worth. But if a leased car is totaled or stolen the lease just terminates. The buyer doesn't get back the down payment.

Down payments serve to reduce the gap (payoff is less)...with YOUR money! To get the greatest benefit of gap insurance (esp 'free' gap like in BMW leases) make no down payment.

This.

Also people leverage down payments in financing to avoid added interest.

On leases, cap cost reduction is still towards tax that is factored in, negating any advantage towards avoiding additional interest.

Insurance will cover what they deem the value to be. It may or may not cover what you actually owe......leased or purchased. You don't necessarily get your down payment back just because you financed, hence why having gap insurance is a value. My point was that people use a totaled vehicle as a reason not to put money down on a lease as if it's really any different than an outright purchase should that vehicle get totaled. It's really not. The only time you're likely to get money back is in the rare instances where you owed less than the value and/or you paid cash (...which is pretty silly in its own right; cheaper used cars notwithstanding).

That's a different discussion.

It is a nuance to make sure of...will your insurance just pay the lease payoff amount or actual value and the fight for therein?

No down value is inherent in leases like BMW that include 'free' gap...take advantage by putting nothing down.

Luckily, I've never been one of those people that buy on payment amount or even think about downs. When I leased BMWs I didn't care what payment was...it is what it is for the SPECIFIC car I wanted because I focused on best negotiated cap and base MF with max MSDs to get max value. For Porsche I just paid cash since their leases so bad.

Agreed with that sentiment. BMW's lease easy. Other marquees not so much.

You need to be able to go to link below and plug in all numbers to verify what is going on...but to me it looks like you are paying max MF of 0.00133 so negotiate for base of 0.000933 and max out MSDs.

Given the range, I settled w/my dealer trade-in value at $49k. So far as price on the M3 comp, I only got a few grand off, though They are not a high-volume dealer and needed to trade for an allocation so I was told 🤷. Then incentives for another coupe grand off.

All in all I'm happy and don't feel ripped off; I was able to get 0.9% financing locked in though BMW which bested my credit union's rates as well. Thanks all for the help; now the wait and I can't wait.

My build:

M3 Comp
TBII
Silverstone full leather
Driving Assistance Pro package
Parking Assistance Package
Executive Package
M Drive pro
825M wheels
Extended shadowline trim delete
M shadowline lights
Steel brakes w/red calipers
Ventilated seats
Interior carbon fiber trim

Will share delivery pics when the time comes, ands thanks again all...

Btw...I did try out a Vroom quote on my X5...they offered me $36k- I was literally insulted.
Hey all. Quick question...this is my current order, as I prefer a tasteful look and this fits that IMHO. Just been thinking about adding the exterior carbon pack...curious what everyone thinks about this and if it's tasteful or more towards the flashy-side of things. Appreciate everyone/anyone's input.

I think only you and enthusiasts will notice the carbon pack. That could be a good thing or a bad thing. Good because it's not too flashy. Bad because it's $5K for something that is a bit hard to notice day to day. The most obvious part IMO is the big rear diffuser.

That's all great points; especially the 5k part and one of the main reasons for my hesitance. Thanks.

Agreed but there isn't even minimal...and weight doesn't matter to the vast majority of non GT 911 owners.

What kind of discount? Did you finance or lease? What was your down payment?
