Also, statistically I am discounting for the phenomenon I would describe as "forum hatred," in which everyone complains about nearly everything. This phenomena often doesn't translate to real-life experiences, the opinion of the general public (i.e., non enthusiast) or actual sales dollars. I disagree and love the way the car looks (so far). However, I will not pass judgement until I can see the car in it's entirety.

WHERE I TAKE ISSUE is with the histrionics of certain members who say "100% the designers of BMW are not proud of this," or other such ridiculous statements.

As with the Edsel, the Aztek, the Pacer ... The G8x joins the VW Phaeton and Bangle Butt as one of Europe's worst auto fails. With the depreciation to match. Anybody that takes a loan or pays cash is out of their mind. |

I am clinging to the slim hope that both of the leaked photos have been taken from oblique angles with cameras that have seriously distorting fish-eye or wide lenses. No matter how much you photoshop them you're not going to correct for the distortions.
I know... it's a slim hope. But just think how many truly awful selfies you've seen taken on phone cameras and cross your fingers until you see a shot from a professional photographer. TBH, I actually sort of liked the 4 concept, and expected the M4 to improve on that, but I was totally underwhelmed the production line photos - front and rear - and I *really* don't like the look of those hood scoops. Plus, for me this car will need to be super-good looking to compensate for the probably awful ZF8 transmission. |

That's like saying you don't know that Rosie O'Donnell doesn't look good in a bikini because you haven't seen her in one yet.

And being that internally the grilles are called the “gates of hell” by the product teams (as SCOTT points out gleefully) , im not sure how much design love there really is. But, all that matters is what the Exec board thinks and they believe it will be successful. Ugly, but perhaps still successful |

and if that belief is because of China, those execs better start hoping for quick control of covid-19, because China has already lost at least a quarter of sales ...

If the car regained some of the magic that was lost when entering the EPS and FI era and has the reliability of the G8X it would have to be really ugly to pass up on.
My F80 could be the most durable and reliable car I’ve owned and that include low tech Japanese SUVs. It’s six years old now and it feels mechanically as new and nothing has broken, not a thing. Usually a Xenon give up around this time at least but nothing. It never need an additional turn of the starter motor whether it’s been raining for a month or it’s hovering up or down around freezing. And this car was one of the first built. As for maintenance of wear items other than oil stuff, I put on new tires and changed rear brake pads. That’s it and it’s my daily all year around. When someone says hard pass due to a new grill design I’m shaking my head |

Yes, it will grow on us like a moldy fungus. Thanks but I'd rather have it not grow on me and just appreciate the plentiful good designs that are already out there that needed no fungal overgrowth.

Hard to say how well this will sell because manufacturers can provide incentives to get anything off the lot. Question is, will the G8x get some of the biggest ever discounts for a BMW? I think this thing looks hideous and may be in need of serious plastic surgery on the front end. If they think they'll move them near MSRP, game over for BMW.

My F80 was also an absolute joy to drive each and every day and was the pinnacle in many ways of M ownership, even faster and easier to drive than my former S85 E63. However, im not saying, and not sure everyone (anyone) is saying hard pass JUST because its BUTT ugly, its actually all of the above and more and the last straw is the ugly design. What i mean is, those of us that have followed and enjoyed for decades the offerings from M have finally has enough. First it was the move away from MT only M cars. Then the wannaB an M but never will be \\\M SUVs came about. Then FI...Then came EPS...Then came an M3 bigger than an E39 M5. Now you will have to deal with all wheel drive on an M3 and a SLUSHBOX it appears for the most powerful versions of the new M3 - And yup... another thing to deal with - multi levels of M3s for peps to fight over which is the “real” M (and no comparison to the very scare CSLs of the past that were true strippers with performance as the focus and not generally for sale in the US). And ofcourse, the car has gotten so damn big and heavy that one can hardly call this an M3, its nowhere near the size and nimbleness of what the small car M was all about. So, its not at all just because of the bucktooth bandit grilles, but in fact the totality of the fall from grace that M has done to now offer something that by 90+% of the biased enthusiasts and their ilk all believe to be ugly, in addition to changing each and every enjoyable attribute from the cars previously known as the M3 into a bland, snout nose, bloated car with very little linkage to the history that made it at all possible. Thats why its a hard pass. |
