Wisconsin Emissions

To those who live in Wisconsin and have modified the exhaust system, which usually deletes some kind of cat - what do you do for testing?

I’m not going to modify the exhaust instantly but would like to down the road if I can either pass the test or not do it at all.

Well, for testing they just read codes via the OBD port, so if you have a tune that turns them off, it shouldn't be an issue.

I forget how often you need to test in Wisconsin. Is it every 2 years no matter the car? I get it mixed up with Illinois where you don't need to test a new car at all for a few years.

I have lived in WI my entire life and have never had a vehicle emissions test. This made me curious so I looked it up on the WI DMV website.

“Vehicles customarily kept in one of these seven southeastern Wisconsin counties require an emissions test: Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington and Waukesha.”

Now I know why I have never had to get an emissions test….

Yeah. Apparently a loop hole is to register the car in another county and that’s the end of it. But I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Something like that. I didn’t know tunes could do that. I’ll have to ask a shop when I get closer to modifying the exhaust.
