Music bands breakup stories
This topic always fascinated me. I'd catch wind of some song and probably I heard of the band and so do my whole usual wiki/research thing and sometimes I find out the band broke up due to some member(s) dying or getting kicked out. Ofc, there's nothing controversial about the former unless it's some drug overdose, etc, but the latter intrigues me.
Anyway, I always knew about this Canadian band Barenaked Ladies but something was off because I thought the lead singer looked different. Turned out the lead singer got kicked out/left and he was replaced by someone who kinda looks like him haha. They never directly addressed why but I would guess it's because he had a drug prb and the band was fed up. Another one was Fleetwood Mac, I guess Stevie Nicks always had some residual resentment towards Lindsey and now unfortunately they can never go back to their most popular lineup. Never knew what was the deal w Van Halen and DLR? Morrissey and The Smiths? List goes on. Got any stories that shocked you and/or made you disappointed when you found out your fave band broke up?

They were all a talented bunch but David Lee Roth needed Van Halen.

Daft Punk really threw me for a loop. I didn't like their music but it was shocking.

DLR thought that he was what propelled Van Halen to success, we all knew that it was Eddie and Alex but DLR was a showman.

There is a whole series of these stories running on TV, something like "Breaking the band". Worth checking out if you like these kinds of things.

Yeah, Roth was a good singer and frontman, but he was only a star when he was with Van Halen, where they all were stars. He thought he didn't need them and could break out on his own. He was wrong.

Moody Blues is another one, apparently the guy who was kicked out said something disparaging to the drummer during some discussion about the band's musical direction "What the heck do you know, you're just the drummer!" (...which is true, you just don't say it out loud)
Yet another one was Supertramp, and unfortunately for Roger Hodgson, his lawyer sucked so when he split the other guy got the rights to the band's name.

Generally-speaking, ofc there are great exceptions. Anyway, that's what I notice when figuring out who wrote songs, it's usually the singer and/or the guitarist.
What's LRB?

Will listen a little at a time. A bit long. Will pay special attention to the last song. I really like the first one. Didn't know it was by them.

Heart breakup still gets me. Ann Wilson's husband smacked Nancy Wilson's kid and that became a key reason for them breaking up a few years ago.
Ann Wilson has one of the greatest rock voices IMO and it's too bad they can't seem to get it together as a group. Nancy is great too, but I wouldn't go pay to see her without Ann on the stage too. On the other hand, I saw Ann Wilson's live show in 2022 and she was amazing. I'd still like to see them bury the hatchet and get back together. |
