Are 2024's getting 8.5?

I did a quick search and didn't see anything. I'm sure I missed it.

I have a 2024 on order and checking if they'll be released with idrive 8.5?

Nope

Nothing official but we're assuming the LCI G8x will have it.

Received my G82 ‘24 last week, still on 8.0.

It annoyed me more “on paper”, now I just don’t give a sh1t and just drive the car instead 😎. Same thing with paint and interior color and wheels. Doesn’t really matter for me when I am actually driving the car.

BMW Blog reported that even when the M2/3/4 get iDrive 8.5, the interface won't be changing.

8.5 will not be available in the 24 MY. Perhaps with the LCI in 25. But as has been noted, BMW is not saying. I don’t care what version I’m on as long as it works. I’m still waiting on the 7/2023 8 update.

I'm skeptical of this.

I don't see why BMW would bother spending development hours to bring 8.5 to our car, which headunit doesn't officially even support 8.5, to simply not update the interface and not give any owners new features.

It just makes no sense.

I wonder if someone will be able to come up with a retrofit to add 8.5, although from what I've been able to learn, 8.5 is more of a incremental update to 8 than anything.

In the article above it mentions new hardware to get 8.5. Although I like some of the new enhancements of 8.5, they do seem pretty minimal.

Can someone explain why people care about 8.5? 9 is out now and 10 will come out and there would be zero chance of getting either on the 21-24 G80,82, or 83.

If you’re always chasing the latest and greatest you’ll never be happy because the next version is always around the corner.

Anyone remember the days where you got a dashboard and that was the dashboard for life?

Not trying to be critical just trying to understand why the desire? BMW has already been clear that the 21-24 won’t get 8.5 so why worry?

They aren't going to bring 8.5 to the existing cars, but probably upgrade the hardware for the LCI. The backend code will be updated, but the UI will look the same as it does today.
The current iDrive 8 looks quite a bit different between the M models and standard, so maybe they don't see the need to spend the time investing in recreating the UI.

My 2024 is on order and I’m happy to have 8.0. From what I’ve read, 8.5 improves some of the climate button issues, but I’m not pressed.

I do wish they'd backport the "climate on/off" toggle next to the climate menu at the bottom, as that's literally the only reason I ever even use the climate menu. Currently have it mapped to a shortcut so I don't have to go into the menu, but having it on the bottom of the screen all the time would be even better.

I just took delivery of a g80 with a November production date and it luckily had the latest 11/23 update. The Genius said I will be able to get 8.5 starting end of Q1 2024 but will have to come in person

That’s what I told him! But he seemed to believe otherwise. Either way idrive 8 is still great and just glad it had the latest software.
Either way it’s good to all just keep this forum updated in case we here anything else

I actually believe they won’t allow 23/24g80s to get 8.5 before the 2025 is on the road. But once 2025s are out they will update the 24g80s after July production

There is no way the supplier will be shipping the same display with two different sets of hardware

The idrive 8&8.5 display supplier is the same.

I thought BMW was moving from android based OS to a more open source Linux OS. Or maybe it’s vice verson. I honestly don’t see any prior LCI G80’s getting 8.5. May need different hardware even thogh Android is still a derivative of Linux. LCI G80’s will likely get 8.5 for LCI but who knows🤷‍♂️

I agree with that but why would the supplier be shipping two different sets of displays to the same Germany plant just to have different hardware. I’m just trying to be as optimistic as possible. Are any of the idrive 8/8.5 models built at the same plant as the g80?

It’s not quite as simple as in previous years, since 8.5 and 9 are co-existing and on completely different platforms but sharing a similar interface.

This has been laid out in some BMW technical docs posted here and elsewhere on the internet.

e.g. iD9 is based on Android Automotive and will feature an App Store, 8.5 is based on Linux and won’t.

The screen can be the same but the underlying OS is different in ID8 vs ID8.5

Of course they could ship different model displays, but they likely wouldn’t need to as only the head unit (hidden in the dash) needs to change.
