Digital Key Poll

Curious if others are using the digital key, and if not why.

I'm using mine 100% of the time.

So you don't have to carry your car keys around? You just carry the card? I've never used it personally

Yes. No. I use my phone as my key. I have the card in my wallet as a backup, but never used it.

The only time the key has ever been in my car was coming home from the dealership.

Give it a try!

Interesting. I guess I've never used it because I have other keys on my key fob that I use.

So does your car unlock when you get close to it and lock automatically when you leave like it does when you have your key fob?

Unfortunately, no. The next version will. You need to touch the door handle with your phone to unlock and put it in the tray to start the car.

If you still need keys for other parts of your life, it might not be worth it. My house and work don't require keys so not having a car key is very nice.

Version 2 of the digital key will be a game changer. It will work like the fob does.

I've tried it. In theory its cool, but in practice, its too cumbersome. I just use the key.

Yeah, I see that. The current implementation isn't very good. It's worth it to me, as now I don't need any keys in my pocket.

Everyone should at least set it up so they have a backup if they forget or misplace their key.

Sucks that BMW decided to not offer the digital key on the 6MT models.

Now you see, im old at 45yrs and although an IT geek and a gadget man the digital key should be my thing but the digital key just seems like an extra level of faff to go through just for the sake of the technology.

With the key, i get close, it unlocks, I slide in and start the car. I have options should i need them curtesy of the buttons on the fob and dont need to get my phone out or swipe a card anywhere to interact with my car.

Im never keen on technology if it feels like its creates more faff than older tried and tested methods simply for the 'cool' affect.

Touchscreens in cars are another example but i'll shutup now as ive said enough

I would carry one in my wallet in case I lost my key or dropped it into the toilet or ??. My car doesn't have one.

Yes, current implementation isn't great. For me, it's still worth it to not have to carry my key around and inadvertently open my trunk and/or windows.

Question for those of us without wireless charging is it the same tray where that would be? I ordered the part from other thread to try and upgrade my car but I don't want it to interfere with this feature. I'd rather have digital key than wireless charging.

Yes, same tray.

I'm really looking forward to it whenever I do take delivery. Here in AZ, the state has partnered with Apple to support storing your Drivers License within Apple Wallet. (No official release date besides early 2022 last I checked)

That means I can now have my car key, driver license, and credit cards all on my phone. I'll have no need for my keys or my wallet when I'm going out any more! At least for small trips until I get more comfortable…

Yes, same tray.
I think the other thread addressed this but if I replace it with the wireless charging tray it should work just as well correct?

That I don't know. My car doesn't have wireless charging, and I have no plans to add it. My battery life is quite good. For longer car trips, I'll just plug it into the port next to the tray.

Cool novelty. Im glad "most" cars come with it. But, like Sunny said, its too much work. Key in pocket, and its the simple motion of just grabbing the handle, sliding into the car, and hitting the start button. No fluff, no having to open my cupholder door to slide the phone in there. Just get in the car, and go.

Yes, all that goes into the "pro" column for the fob. The con of always having to have the key outweighs the pros for me at least.

I don't like to drive with my phone in my pocket (uncomfortable), so I have to put it somewhere, might as well be the designated tray.

I do wish the UWB version was out now, so your phone could stay in your pocket if you want and the experience would be the same as using the fob. I guess I'll have to wait for my next car.

Yeah, I have a 13 Pro Max. Waaay too big to keep it in my pocket. for my big hands, its trying to peel the phone off of the tray, as well. Like trying to pick a penny up off a sheet of glass. Of course, I do things one way, try them and they dont work for me, then I'll end up trying it, again, in a year, and that will be the only route I go. I can see that happening.

Download and setup the AZ Mobile ID app and you can have your DL on your phone now in AZ. Sure, not as cool and integrated as if it was within the Apple Wallet, but it still works as a digital ID. Of course the MVD does notate that the digital ID may not be an acceptable form of identification at all places.
