To me Audi's just aren't cut out for the track.

That being said, I'm still taking the R8.

Are you freaking kidding me?! So we go to a track where like minded enthusiast and a common set of rules are in place to keep everyone safe but you have a need to reach for the stereo volume?! You reached for the volume during critical steering inputs multiple times. You shouldn't be reaching for it at all! No race track etiquette between either of the cars from what I could see. Your priorities on the track are clearly ass backwards. Great cars piloted by dumb ass drivers.

I'd agree with you if we were novice drivers. I won't go into details but I can tell you I have a lot of experience in much much faster cars than these and so does the guy in the R8 and this was just a fun track day for us to beat on our personal cars and have some fun. At no point were we ever out of our element. In a race car, drivers have to deal with a whole lot more than just turning the wheel. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad I could provide some context to put your concerns at ease

It looked like a pretty "casual" track day, not a lot of traffic, the OP also looked quite comfortable out there. That being said, it's obviously not smart to be touching the audio dial on a track; an instructor would be furious and so would the track organization. I do listen to music in the pits though and always make sure I turn it off before pit out. I'm curious though, doesn't the G80 have audio controls on the steering wheel or am I mistaken?

lol, OP is qualified to reach for the volume knob. Fun vid, thanks for sharing. Shows again what the G8X can do in capable hands. Putnam is a great little technical circuit that can expose chassis flaws. Left there "needing" coilovers for my E90 years ago. G8x performing well there is another good sign.

to be honest the audi driver was pretty rubbish and your m4 looked squirelly as hell!! The R8 in more capable hands i doubt it would be that close

Exactly, the 8 speed auto & AWD surely would've given the V10 R8 an even better run.

I have doubts about this, but a good showing for the M4 (6MT no less!).

Congrats!

I've owned a gen 1 r8, gen 2 r8, and highly modded 997 gt3. I have tracked all of them and the r8 is a great road car but poor track car. Regardless, I'm not surprised to see they are similiar on track to a newer m3.

Just my opinion.

Regarding operating various car controls while on track. I won’t specifically comment on the OP who as others have said is qualified to twirl a knob or two, but just in general with amateurs like me and a bunch of other forum members.

One of the abilities one hopes to develop during HPDE is to start paying attention to many things in and out of the cockpit, to adjust on the fly anything that needs it, and hopefully not have a death grip on the steering wheel. Develop it bit by bit over time, staying safe of course but do develop it.

By all means check and tighten your belts and harnesses during the session. Disable that collision mitigation setting (duh adc, you really forgot to do it in the pit lane?). Recall the TPMS screen when your passenger accidentally touches the idrive controller. Change the engine mode to experiment from lap to lap, or switch between MDM and off to find out if it is helping or hurting you. Adjust the airflow if needed, bring the visor up or down, etc. Thumbs-up the car you passed if you can. All while driving smoothly and not missing a beat.

The ability to multitask while on track might save your bacon. And I’ll mitigate this by saying you need to distinguish what is safe to do and what isn’t.

Say if your phone mount detaches from the windshield and falls in your footwell, I suggest slowing to a safer speed and exiting to pits to retrieve it, for safety reasons. You probably can’t adjust this one on the fly.

Is my R8 faster from a dig and a straight line (traps 130-131)- yes but the car just has never been truly track dialed from a chassis and dampening standpoint. Its an amazing street car IMHO with luxury inside and beauty on the out.

It sure has a brilliant presence though and the V10 exhaust note is worth all the marbles. Since Im not a track master, the R8 (my 4th) is a perfect low budget last normally aspirated 600 plus hp car standing (one of them).

Oh I love my G80- heck its my 2nd!!!!

Great job to the OP too---are you sure you are even matched with your R8 compatriot
Okay. Now I really need to know…. How the heck many cars do you own and we need to see a pic of the garage please

That R8 was loose, you were stressing them out for sure.

Curious given youre a qualified track driver...What do you make of the grip with the 4s, and how would you gauge the tire noise. Were you exceeding the limit, or are they just super chatty cause of the small shoulder blocks.

Also, what was your hot tire pressure?

I'm not the OP, but I have tracked on *MPS4S and while it's a great street tire that can be taken on the track once and awhile, it's not up to snuff for repeated track use. Hot pressures around 34, not to exceed 38. Clearly the OP was having a fun casual HPDE, so they were sliding around letting the tires squeal. The 4S has good grip, but nothing like dedicated track tires. They will get greasy after a few hard laps if you don't do tire maintenance (cool down laps etc)

Looks like fun! What do you normally track? What's your impression of the G8X for someone like me who tracks once or twice a month, arrive and drive, 1 time attack a month? It's obviously very capable, but is it fun?

To be honest I'm not sure as I don't really have any other comparisons. I've only ever raced on slick race tires. Tires were decent but you could only really do 3-4 "push" laps before they'd go scorching hot and just lose a bunch of grip. Sidewall looks like it was melting lol. Hot pressures kept coming in at 42 and I'd bleed them down 4-5psi and somehow they would always find themselves back to true 40-42 range again the following run. Tire temps in the low 200s after only 2-3 laps.

First time tracking a street car believe it or not haha. Just had the opportunity to take my M4 out there from an invite from the organizers and I was local so couldn't pass it up. I have been lucky to have had a pretty extensive racing career with highlights of 4 Indy 500 runs. 24 hours of Daytona in prototypes and the wild looking "Deltawing" 12 hours of Sebring and some other open wheel cars Thru out my racing years.

Car is very capable on the track for a once a month visit

Lines up with my experience as well. Even with Cup2 which is michelins track oriented tire, pushing beyond just a few laps got them super hot and greasy. I had temps measuring 220s at one point. Car weight is just a killer.
