Finally saw one in person

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Made an appointment to go see one in person since my local dealer finally got a couple. I was planning on test driving it too but I didn't realize I had scheduled this appointment on the last day of the month, and the CA was running around with her head cutoff. I decided to be merciful and told her we can schedule a test drive in a couple days when things settle down (and when the test drive won't feel rushed). So driving impressions yet to come!

First impressions:

1) People weren't kidding about it looking better in person. It looks stunning in person. I was very skeptical but wow does it have presence.
2) In pictures I found the M3 to look better than the M4.... but in person I find the M4 looks better than the M3.
3) I like IOMG but my wife hates it. Wish I could have seen one in TB2.
4) I'm usually not a fan of CF interior trim (I think it can look tacky)... but it's been done beautifully here and I may actually consider optioning my build with it.
5) I didn't find the carbon bucket seats to be any more uncomfortable than my current m340i seats. That being said, getting in and out does require a few extra gymnastics, and they are a little on the snug side so I can see them getting uncomfortable on longer drives. I'll probably skip them even though I love the look.

Looking forward to getting behind the wheel!

Nice!! Since both cars you saw were IOMG, what wheels did you like better with the color? The dark tint bicolor or the jet black?

It's funny how in pictures what I saw and how my mind translated it ended up being different from seeing them in person.

In pictures I thought the jet black looked better. But in person I actually preferred the bicolor wheels. I felt they added a bit of depth to the wheels that made them stand out more.

Funny how that works... I'm pretty much set on IOMG but cannot decide on which wheel to get. Seems like every day I switch from silver 825M to either of the 826M wheels.

I've yet to see IoMG in person, but it's my runaway favorite color for this generation. Also love how it goes with KO interior.

Going to wait until hype dies down a little, would like to test drive one myself.

I saw that combo person on an M3 with jet black 826M wheels and was sold on the color right away... again, I still can't decide on wheel choice lol it will become a gameday decision when the time comes.

I vacillated on that for a long time. Finally settled on the 825 bicolors. I'm hoping I made the right decision when I finally see it in person.

I was going to say, you saw both and only posted pics of one of the cars until I realized that they are both IOMG. Odd that the dealer would order 2 hard to get cars in the same color.

I think that wheel goes the best with IOMG so you've made a great choice... be sure to post pics when it arrives!

Yeah I was hoping for a different color to see... may be SPY or TB2 or TR... even the interiors for both were identical... black interior with the carbon bucket seats and carbon fiber trim.

Pictures and video just as soon as I can get to South Carolina to get my hands on it! My concern was that they might be too bright and contrasty in person.

Contrasty is a great word lol but I think it will be great. I think it will make the green pop.

Well, I'm getting Enzian blue, but I hope it pops in a good way on it just the same. Pop is actually the word I had in mind when I ordered it.

FINALLY got a chance to drive it. Also saw one in dravit grey today.

Driving impressions:

- This car LIVES in the 60 mph+ range. Before that it's like a wild animal trying to get loose but not fully awake yet. I wouldn't say there's lag, but it REALLY wakes up at higher speeds.
- Handles incredibly. Very flat and feels extremely light for such a heavy car. If I didn't know it weighed nearly 4k lbs I'd have guessed it was 3,500 lbs or below. High speed cornering just offers endless grip. Where my m340i begins to lose grip, the G80 just taunts you to keep pushing it harder.
- Steering is better than the m340i but still somewhat on the numb side. That was a bit of a letdown as I was hoping BMW would have worked some magic. That being said it is very precise, it just doesn't communicate as much as I'd like it to.
- It's VERY tail happy... kicking the tail out is almost too easy.
- It's loud but doesn't make popcorn like my m340i (this could be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences).
- The suspension is definitely better than my m340i. In comfort mode it soaks up bumps much better (whereas my m340i with the static m suspension crashes over bumps in comparison), but in sports+ you really start to feel the road.
- I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting AWD. Especially as a daily driver and wanting to experience some of that power at lower speeds. I'll have to drive the AWD version when it hits dealerships to see if I truly lose anything in dynamics.

I will be the first to admit how much I love my m340i, but I also recognize it isn't a true M car. This experience today absolutely confirmed it. Totally different experience. While the m340i is a rocket ship and handles pretty damn well, the M3 makes it feel like it's stuck in molasses in comparison. EVERYTHING is quicker... throttle response, steering inputs etc. It's not just an m340i on crack... it's a purpose built sports car.

Please post pictures when you do (in sunlight and out). I had been strongly considering this color for my AWD LCI G80 order, but am now conflicted after seeing the Marina Bay Blue.

Finally saw the G8x in person myself a week or so ago. I've liked the pics (mostly) since the leaks, but wow is it so much better in person as everyone else mentions. In pictures the grilles dominate the front, but they appear less prominent in person to me.

I most definitely will along with a video hopefully from my PCD. there is only one decent YouTube video on the color outside in the sunlight. It's a good clear video but I'm still teething judgement until I see the color on person.

First and foremost thanks for the picture. Davit and Kyalami looking mighty fine on the G82. I don't mean no disrespect but it took a test drive for you to confirmed what can or should have already been confirmed? That your M340i is not an M car Lol. BMW make great sports sedan. Their series are good or great, but the M cars are next level. Prior to the official unveiling you couldn't tell from the test video on how the M4 was quickly scooting around the ring while still being so composed? The M4 is mighty fine in person.

I apologize if I offended you.

Bit of an odd comment lol....

But to address it... I already knew the m340i is not an M car... as stated in my post. This drive just confirmed what I already knew. Also, watching something on video and actually driving and experiencing it are totally different.
