It’s a nice-to-have backup until it supports Proximity Comfort Access.

I'm hoping I still know where mine is so I can give it to whomever buys my car. In its current version it is just too much of a hassle for me. I have a minimalist wallet so I'm not putting any extra stuff in there that I'm not going to use. If/when it gets to the point that it can act like a key fob and I can leave the card in my wallet and use that to start the car vs having a key fob THAT will be super cool and useful.

You only need the card to initially set up your digital key on your phone or if you want a backup

Ah, ok. Maybe I forgot. But you have to put your phone in the tray to start the car?

Unfortunately, yes. For me it's ok because it's uncomfortable keeping the phone in my pocket and that's a convenient place to put it. But, I agree with everyone's comments that this current implementation isn't ideal.

I would love to use the digital key, but it's not compatible with my phone. I have a Galaxy S21 Ultra. I read an article saying it'll be compatible with Android devices by 2021 but I haven't seen it. Even updated to the latest OS (Android 12) still no luck. I think BMW just needs to update their app to make it work.

I finally got digital key to work with my Android device.

Question - Everytime I get in my car I have to choose my profile. Is it possible to map my profile to the digital key?

Another thing I've noticed is if I lock my car for the first time after using the digital key with my profile selected my side view mirrors fold automatically. If I were to unlock and relock my mirrors do not fold. Only way to fold them is get in the car, select my profile then lock the car.

Yes, you can tie it to your profile.

I also have it setup on my Apple Watch, but it doesn't default to my profile if I use it to unlock the door. If I use my phone it does

Thanks. I got it working.

When I was setting my profile to the digital key it did say I can have it mapped to one device only. I'm wondering if that's the reason why it won't work with Apple watch because you already have your phone mapped.

It's not technically another key though. It's the key on the phone that can be used on the watch too. I didn't have to set up the watch as another key, it just showed up because it syncs with the phone. A BMW genius is "researching" the issue.

Glad you got yours working.

My guess is it's not the exact same key even though it was synced with the phone, otherwise the car shouldn't be able to tell if the car was unlocked by the watch or the phone.

I'm a network engineer and I get to work with a software that manages 100+ devices (mainly routers/switches). With this software we push out some basic configuration, one of them is password to harden the routers or switches. The password that is pushed out is the same on all the devices, but since the password is clear text the router/switch encrypts it by using certain parameters (ex. MAC address) that are unique to that device. So a 10 character password might turn into a 25+ character string all random. If you were to copy that encrypted password to another device it would not work, even though the clear text password was the same that was pushed by the software manager. Trying to explain this in layman's term so I apologize if I confuse you.

The whole point of what I said above is, the digital key might be the same, but the hardware and software combination is what makes it unique.

Makes sense, thanks. Either way, it's a bug that BMW should have figured out during testing before they put on production cars.

No don't care option in the poll?
Honestly not sure if I have it or not, but other than showing it off to someone, I doubt I would ever use it. My key fob is always in my pocket and pretty convenient. No need to unlock a phone or take it out of my pocket or deal with dead battery issues.

Haven't tried it is what you'd pick. You don't need to unlock your phone, and it still works if it's dead (at least on iPhones).

Incorrect, as you need both physical keys to set up the iPhone digital key. 2 months ago I changed from a iPhone 12 to 13 and needed both fobs to enable the digital key for my F95 ZCP.

PS I cheated on the poll, as my G83 is held up at the VPC for a 2+ week stop sale, my vote was based on my previous 12 months of the digital key for my F95 ZCP. I prefer the remote engine start using the key fob and having the car cooled down before entering. I wish the G83 remote start could also drop the roof.

However, I did use the digital key this past May when I was a volunteer for the PGA Championship for the week as it was nice not have keys while I walked inside the ropes.

The card is totally separate from the digital key, which is via the "my BMW" app.

Your talking about this card?

Yes. The BMW dealership Genius did my setup, so maybe you don't need it during setup either. I was really commenting on the person who said they don't want to use the digital key because they have a minimalist wallet and don't want to carry around the card. My point was you don't need to carry around the card, you can just use your phone. I thought you needed it during setup, but maybe not.
