I had my 1200 mile service completed today. When I came home I opened my app on my S21 and now I see BMW Digital Key. I know this was not there a couple of days ago.
I followed the directions and it failed several times. Then I removed my phone case and it linked up. Now when I hold my phone by the door handle it will lock and unlock. I guess this means it’s setup? Does this mean I don’t have to carry my key? Do I need to have the digital credit card thing with me or just my phone. This seems pretty cool!

Ive just noticed that ive now got the digital key on my S21 ultra. Will give it a whirl as soon as I get a chance.

Anyone done it yet on Android since the option appeared on the BMW app?

You don't need your fob or the card. The "credit" card is a nice backup or if you need to valet or be towed.

The feature is cool and all, but I think I'll stick to my key fob. It would have been nice if the digital key worked from any door and also the trunk. I kept finding myself running to the driver's side door if I wanted to open the trunk or any other door. It was a bit inconvenient.

The fact that I have to do anything manually with the key(phone) is inconvenient and therefore useless. Nice backup though.

Thanks, reinstalling did the trick

manual seems to indicate this feature is only available with steptronic transmission for some reason!

Agreed, I set mine up this weekend and took the car out Monday - it's a neat trick but digging your phone out to hold it up to the door and drop it in to the little tray instead of just...grabbing the door handle and starting the car without thinking about it is a little annoying. I have a Pixel 6 (no UWB) so maybe a 6 Pro or something else with UWB would be better, longer range?

But typing all that, I have to say, this is the firstest of first world problems. "Getting my phone out to unlock and start my M3 is so time consuming!" My 1988 Jeep has a separate key for door locks and ignition...and they were directional, only cut on one side. Had to dig my keys out, figure out which one, inevitably put it in the lock the wrong way, then put in the right way, then fumble for the other one...how did people survive??

My digital key is working fine on my android phone but I gotta say I do prefer the key.

The digital key i find is useful if I need to get into the car on the fly, i.e. Im out in the garden or near the car to get something out etc as I've always got my phone with me.

But as I have to remove my rather large S21 Ultra from its case each time to start my car, the actual key is a still the best way for me.

Another excellent point - my Pixel 6 in a case baaaaaaaarely fits in the tray to start the car. Any much bigger and I'd be out of luck. No way would I fumble it in and out of a case rather than just use the key fob.

Remember the days when cell phones weren't movie theaters and they fit in your pocket? Those were the days.

I am sorely tempted by the Galaxy flip phone thingy. That could really work! Big screen half tge form factor.

Or just keep using the key which i gotta say I prefer
