I thought the M traction control is there by default (without any optional package) on the non X-drive models. Is that not true?

Not true. You still have to add M Drive Professional to have access to it for both Competition and Competition xDrive.

Well that sucks. Too late to add it to my build now. Hopefully it's just a software update.

Or potentially done with simple coding

You do have traction control. It’s different with the M drivers package or whatever its called. That mode gives you the option to set the traction control from 1-10. You cannot do this without the package. Without the package you can either have traction on or off.

I read someone asked their dealer and it was not possible via simple software upgrade. I didn't add it to mine either, since the only time I want to do RWD is when I want to completely turn it off. But now FOMO has gotten me and I can't help but wonder how much that 10 step traction control can help during slides.

The 1-10 traction levels is definitely my favorite new feature. Seems like a great way to build up your control. Coming from someone who is just tipping their toes into mdm on the f87 it's a bit scary lol

That is the one option I wish my car had. Let's see if it does become a software upgrade in the future.

I spec'd for my pending G83 build--which is probably overkill for a vert.

Is this option grayed out in the iDrive if the car is not equipped with the M drive professional package?

Hopefully I'm not mistaken but I recall seeing the 10 stage traction control setting on the base vehicle that did not have the M drive package on the window sticker. The option was there just grayed out and I couldn't move the slider. If that's the case I'm hoping all it takes is a software update or coding to enable the feature.

Since I lost the tire lottery and didn't get the Michelins, I've been playing around with the 10-stage traction control late at night on an abandoned warehouse parking lot. I figure I may as well learn how to use it now with tires I care less about. And it's brilliant in its execution, but you certainly need to practice in a closed environment or a track, not on public roads.

But once you understand how the car will respond with various throttle inputs at the different stages of TC, you can have some fun on certain roads like on-ramps and off-ramps (with no vehicles approaching you).

The BMW engineers should be applauded for giving us the video-game like option in a $75,000 M3. And the fact that it will rate drifts is just remarkable, hard to believe this made it past BMW's legal department.

Don't confuse Traction Control (TC) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The former only uses engine power output management to control rear wheel slip, the latter uses individual brake application at the different wheels to regulate yaw angle.

What color on the video ? It has some copper / bronze color but it's not as bright as zanzibar either.

I'd like some clarification too... i'm sure i've seen the option on cars that were not speced with the M driver's package... Car was not started but i could see the 10 step traction controls on the Xdrive model which by the way requires DSC OFF in 2WD mode to be enabled.

edit: I figured it out, for ireland / UK cars, the option 1MB "M Drive Professional" is listed under standard equipment. That's why it didn't appear as on option on the cars I was looking at at the dealership. Saw the standard equipment set on the full quote print out.

Or just turn off traction control completely and learn the limits in a controlled environment.

How are you holding up without it? Curious as a build I am following doesn't have this option. Have you been sliding around?

Have you been utilizing the setting fully off for the most part on a few slides or setting 3/4? Extremely close to purchasing a vehicle without this option, I really wanted it.

No sliding around. Surprisingly, the traction on the RWD is really good. I have had AWD cars in the past and sometimes it feels like my M3 is AWD even though it's not. I have more confident exiting out of turns at high speeds.
