G82 M4 Competition Laps Hockenhiem GP in 1:54.60

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I found this lap time according to the source here: https://fastestlaps.com/models/bmw-m3-competition-n-a Looks like Sports Auto has not yet posted the video. This result is really decent but I was actually expecting something better lol. Driven by the same driver, the comp model is 1s quicker than the base model. So the performance difference is not that big. However it is a bit slower than M5 Comp. So I'd imagine the Nurburgring time would be somewhere between 7:35 and 7:40. It would be a different story with Cup 2 on tho.

Wow that same driver got a 1:56 in a 718 cayman gts and a 1:55.8 in an M2CS. a full second is quite a bit of time on a short-ish track. Also the m5 comp is AWD not sure how much that will impact the laptime but the m3 comp awd could come in faster than that. He tied his dbs superleggera time I can't see how that's disappointing

You would expect it to do well on a power track like Hockenheim. What tires was it on? Regardless still shows the price to performance ratio is up there, it's in the ballpark with some more serious metal.

It would be interesting to compare how each generation of M3/M4 improved their laptimes over the previous generation. Would be curious to see which generation jump had the best and worst margin of improvement. Might even be interesting to see how they all performed on the same tire... someone should do it

Was on Michelin PS4S.
By the way: This was a comparo by sport auto with the Alfa Giulia QV.
On paper (Alfa claims) the Giulia shall be 140kg lighter. In reality the Giulia was 16kg lighter
Ah yes and the G80 smoked the Giulia (on Pirelli PZero Corsa!) on track! More than 2 seconds faster!

That wouldn't be Alfa's first lie about the QF. They also said it was reliable.

So much in these track runs depends on the tires, weather, and the driver's experience.

It's doubtful that G8x sales will be impacted by this statistic (a good thing).

And looking at the track time, it is as fast as 992 Carrera 2S and Corvette Stingray C8!

My base M3 is a very impressive car even compared to other P-GT cars in my stable. I quite love the new M3 and it hauls 4 comfortably. Amazing.

Another really impressive time. Just a second advantage as compared to the base. If you're into the G8X, get the three pedals while you can.

I was hoping the G80 Competition would be as quick as the 718 GT4 to be honest, it's close but not there (yet).

The 718 GT4 Sport Auto tested on Hockenheim GP did a 2:53.9 on Cup2 tires and with more than -2deg camber front and rear (out of factory spec strangely). So Cup2 tires on the G80, a set of camber plates and it's there. It will still eat its front tires on a trackday though compared to the 718.

The MxDrive AWD times should be interesting, as it will be an improvement over the RWD time. Only time will tell……

I made this comment just to collect "likes/appreciates" :

I've heard stories about QF reliability on both ends of the spectrum.

I wouldn't be so sure. In theory…. more understeer, lower power to weight, more transmission loss.

Will certainly be interesting to see which is actually faster.

Taking circuit time with PS4S tire is legit. You can't think our car is faster just because there is a factory Cup2 option which wasn't available for previous generations or some of the competitions. Enthusiasts here take for granted everything needs to be tuned up to 11 just to show numbers seemingly for bragging. The fact is there're many more poised, more competent, and more hardcore competitors reporting ring time just fine with ps4s/p0 tire without the thought of changing to Cup2 to show better times. Kind of insecurity.

To clock ring time (even hypothetically) at below 7:40 already is an amazing achievement for a hot rod 3 series that yet remains every bit as daily drivable.

I see the most of the G8X owners right now are new and having unrealistic expectation out of excitement. This "our car is invincible" mentality is kinda sick and is killing meaningful discussion (strength and weakness breakdown & etc).

With MxDrive, it's gonna be faster than rear driven one, that power and torque is too much to manage for a production street car like this.

@SeanWRT - you seem to misinterpret the expectations.

The M3 needs to live up to its competition in my opinion - for a price tag of more than 100k there is a lot of it!

And on a track day where the M3 kind of works, the Cayman GT4 is one of those cars sticking to your tail - that car seems to sell well because you see it on trackdays a lot recently.

Not bad in line with a porsche taycan turbo, 997 911 turbo, cayman 981 gt4. You hope it would equal the M4 GTS. You can hope.
