Shoulda just made it a shooting brake hatch and avoided the weird rear end design that it has now.

Well, we have the M2 prototype photos and people say the fenders are clearly wider (I haven't checked back or measured it myself).
I couldn't decipher much from the G87 camouflaged mules but if that's what is, then I guess I stand corrected.

The OP's original theory didn't sound that farfetched to me but I can't deny actual evidence of the contrary..

The photos on the test mule seems to show it is a lot wider though, both the front fenders and the rear quarters

If they are not wider, the G87 can't re-use the suspension components from the G82 M4 which we know is what the G87 will get as it is basically a truncated M4

Don't feel like a jerk or apologize for anything. People need to stop being so fragile and taking disagreements as personal attacks.

Alright it's growing on me.

Sure the M240 is a little quirky, but overall just fine. 230 is clean and I'm sure the M2 will be super clean. Can't wait to drive these!

My thoughts:
Front end- I like most of it but on the M240i the cerium vent accents are not great. would look a lot better in black or body colored.

Rear end- Don't understand why the tail lights are inverted relative to the headlights. Imagine the twilight flipped and it would look noice!

How the heck do you make a car longer, wider, and heavier and get less leg room? I was hoping rear leg room would add at least an inch or two going to the G-based platform. That will almost certainly rule it out for me.

No manual is a real disappointment but not necessarily surprising given it isn't available on the the 3er or 4er.

Thundernight metallic is gorgeous. Unsure If I would have the guts to order one though.

For me the lack of rear legroom is a real disappointment and a deal breaker. I see a Golf-R/ Audi S3 in my future. would have preferred it to be a M240i

Maybe this will grow on me but this is hideous.

I've tried to warm up to the G22 4 series but can't get the Mustang profile out of my mind. And this 2 series looks literally like a puzzle of different design elements forced together and then the designers called it a day.

At least on the 2 door side, somehow the F32 was the last of the classic BMW lines. The 8 series coupe is gorgeous in its own right though.

Supra looks good???
Another proof that looks are subjective.

To me, Supra is a typical japanese overdesigned stuff that absolutely makes no sense loses appeal quickly
If the Supras fake vents were smoothed over for actual slippery aero it would be about 0.3s quicker to 60.*

* Possibly BS but still.

To my eyes the rears look no wider on that mule. The fronts however do. It’s much easier to swap out the front fenders to add width.

Overall, I think the general look of the car is quite appealing. This shot, with a tweak to the bumper of course.

From the back and rear quarter panel it looks like a Toyota, maybe the little sister of a Supra.

They missed the memo, of it isn't broke, don't fix it! Was no need to "Redesign"... When maybe a few little tweaks would do! Here they went overboard and destroyed a pretty good looking car, made it look like an Asian import! Good job!
Your car has all the styling detail of a marshmallow. Only the M2 of the previous generation actually looks good. The new 2 finally looks like a sports coupe not a random two door subcompact.
It finally looks proportional, rear section of previous gen 2 series looked cramped up. IMO It's striking, aggressive, looks premium, does not look boring at all. What's with all the triangle hate? People are so opposed to change in any direction. Cars have gotten bigger, so have the safety standards, these are meant to be driven on road without any harness or helmets. If the next gen M2 is proportional like this with a longer wheelbase then it'll be a perfect replacement for someone like me looking for a smaller M3/M4 without any sacrifice in power.

There is no way the rear fenders won’t be wider unless BMW decides the same wheel and tire width is appropriate on the M2. If it has an S58, that seems very unlikely given the significant power difference.

Spy shots already show wider fenders. G87 is going to be an amazing send off for pure BMW M ICE.

Poochie,

Artemis is one of the moderators, and pretty much an expert on all things M2. If you doubt me, search his many educated and informative posts.

The spy shots clearly show wider fenders front and rear, and the front grill (middle and edges) will have a different -- and very likely M style -- openings.

If you still doubt me, wait 4 months, and the reveal will prove Artemis right.
