Top 50 Drivers in the World

Autosport annually compiles a list of the Top 50 drivers in the world. With the 2020 season being made tumultuous by the pandemic which affected the starting dates, numbers of races, and drivers sitting out races due to illness we had one of the most exciting seasons across all genres of racing.

There are some real surprises here!!

Enjoy!!

Poor Kimi at 39! AutoSport claims to be the leading authority on motorsport hence their list should be based on the best drivers with the ''equipment available'' at time of driving.

I know everyone loves Kimi because of his IDGAF personality. He is a quick driver over a lap and a clean racer. He is in the same tier as RIC. He was gifted the 2007 championship when Ferrari held Massa in the pits to switch the order. I don't have a problem with maximizing results but a WDC should be won or lost on the track.

I definitely don't see Verstappen in second.
First 40+ races against Ricciardo and he came off second best.
One of the markers of a truly great is that they beat their team mates from the very beginning of their f1 career.

Great to see our man at number 7, great result in a POS car.

For those who don’t know, number 13 who drove for the (part) Penske team in our touring car series has joined their Indi team. He is a huge talent!

We’ll claim him as ours even though he is from the other side of the Antipodean ditch.

There are a few Aussies on that list. When you consider our population I think we have to be punching above our weight?

No you wouldn't see MV anywhere, actually he should be in first taking into account the equipment, drive and skill as a whole that was available to him.

For some reason I didn't get to see the V8 supercar series this year...I don't think it was televised in the UK in 2020.
One of my all time favourite race car series.

Coincidentally I've watched a couple of episodes of Frayed which is supposed to be set in your hometown of Newcsatle.

With all the shit this year the Supercar series was shortened somewhat with our local race cancelled. I find it a bit boring now days but I catch it every now and then. Now back in the day it was a great TC series!

I had never heard of Frayed until now, certainly hasn’t been shown down here AFAIK anyway.

The picture in their Wiki page is definitely Newcastle beach though

Well done MK -
Autosport is highly respected motorsport journalism. The level of detail and research in each driver's review is welcomed.

As I've said before on this forum....
-Dominant teams happen
-Dominant drivers happen

Turkey. He failed miserably. A race he was supposed to take pole and win. He was literally sitting next to a dumpster crying in his beer. And we won't even talk about the race.

Excluded from the #1 position on that performance alone.

I would have hoped to see Kevin Estre on this list, but I can understand the competition. Highly underrated driver with balls of steel. If you haven’t seen his pass on the Ring, 24 hour jam, on the straight in his RSR use the ole google machine. Earth sized balls.

The Bottas ranking seems comically high. Was this ranking before George Russell went for a ride in the Merc?

You are just going by what brit journalist Tremayne has said just from the Turkish race and we know who they will follow under pc pressure.
This was a bizarre race allowed to be set up on a track covered in oil that should have at best been refused for f1 racing from the start so can't be used as an example for 'best driver' with someone who lucked into a win. If VER had won I would not have judged his driving from this on a track that was only suitable to be part of a rally cross course.

Weren't you guys all waxing lyrically about Verstappens massive performance advantage (seconds a lap) during the practice sessions and how he was the rainmeister and was going to blitz the field during the race?
Yet even with all that car advantage he still had a miserable race spinning and sliding all over the shop like a rookie.
The eventual winner showed exactly how to win a race when you don't have the best car, you just need talent and skill in poor conditions.

Here is an idea..why don't you guys just support your man with as much enthusiasm as you like and leave it at that.

The thing is, you don't make Verstappen a better driver by endlessly
making up BS about other teams cheating and how rubbish other drivers/teams are.

You just encourage folk who support those other teams/drivers to push back.

I don't think anything will stop mpowerbelge from being a douche about anyone who isn't Verstappen...but you at least seem to have more about you.

No one can say I didn't at least try.

Let me congratulate you on having the most flexible mind on the planet. Your ability to ignore objective realities is absolutely astounding.

You and one other member were bragging on his prowess in Turkey and downing HAM to no end.

You are shameless.

What? Go back and watch the 2007 Brazilian GP. Raikkonen was gaining on Massa the entire 2nd stint and went long to cover off Massa.

The undercut didn't work back then (like it does now) because of refueling. Kimi went 3 laps longer on his 2nd stint and was able to clear Massa.

If you watch the stop, there was no delay at all. Stop making things up.
