That's pretty much my routine every time I go to The Big Easy! That and I try to have eyes in the back of my head on quiet side streets.

Quiet side streets are now best avoided.

My first trip to NOLA I got some good advice from some of NOLA's finest, stay off the side streets, and if a street isn't well lit stay off. A great city, but as a tourist anywhere use common sense and I rely on the unofficial motto of the Office of the Chief Coroner investigators where I spent 9 years.....Think Dirty.

So true.

And this is good advice for anyone in any large city. We were once in Barcelona walking the city and I stopped our group when I saw the clear line of demarkation between the good part of town and the bad part of town. I thank my NOLA experience for this 6th sense.

It's crazy how just 1 street can change everything. Decades ago I was on a business trip in Greensboro NC. My boss and I were driving around downtown at about 6:00 PM on a weeknight looking for dinner and having no luck. Lost of nice old office buildings but no restaurants. We figured we needed to head out of the business core to find a restaurant and started driving down some random arterial (this was long before cell phones and Google Maps). As we approached some railroad tracks I made a joke about the other side being "the wrong side of the tracks." Sure enough, the moment we crossed it was like a switch got flipped. The Newport cigarette factory was on our left, a brawl of maybe 5 or 6 dudes had broken out on the right. Boarded up buildings and a burnt out car on the next block. Literally every person on the street stared at us as we slowly drove by in our rental car looking for a safe place to turn around and get the Hell out of there.

I lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan way back in the heyday of CBGB's, etc. But I liked BMWs.
So I bought bad looking bodies (2002s), and hopped up the chassis & engine. I also had three kill-switches on them (battery, ignition, starter).
We parked with the glove box open! I had a secret hinged panel which hid my radio!
The good old days....

I went to school in LA in the early 80's, we had to do some clinical work at Martin Luther King Hospital in Watts. When you drove over the Harbor Freeway it was a whole new world.

US cities are nuts, with all due respect. I have travelled a bit for work to some ho-hum places, I really enjoy seeing new places and try to find the interesting bits to explore. I am talking Wichita, Erie (PA), Youngstown, Port Huron, Bay City etc.... not big places other than St Louis and Philly.

They are all downright weird, basically donut cities where the downtown is sketchy and the money is in the burbs. And yeah, you can go from "OK" to "Fucking get me out of here" in seconds.

I'm surprised the SJW's haven't shut them down for "slut shaming" eggs.

This sounds *exactly* like what happened to me on a business trip to Washington, DC with my boss about 30 years ago. He wanted to go to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner (after dark), but didn't know where it was. He picked a random street and we started walking. After a few blocks, the neighborhood started looking sketchy. Two blocks after that, I suggested that we turn around and get out of there before we got shot. He talked me into going one more block, when I told him that I was now SURE that we were going to get shot. Just look at the sign on that building...Ford's Theatre!

Believe it or not, the Hard Rock Cafe was a few doors down...and he found it without a map or even the address.....
