2022 xDrive launch 0-60 problems?

Hey all,

Happy holidays and (almost) happy new year!

I have my 2022 M3 xDrive Comp since mid Oct. This car is an absolute blast on track, where it counts the most I suppose, but I've been having problems doing 0-60 runs that are even close to what the lead BMW reviewers show.

Refereeing to stock setup, I'm seeing credible people post 3.1s or 3.2s runs. I'm way far from that closer to 4s.

I'm curious what other owners (of the same car) have done themselves for 0-60 runs, and also what do I need to check in the car, or improve in myself to be closer to the low 3s runs.

Cheers!

Most important question… are you using Launch Control?

2nd (set of) question(s) - are you on a decent road? What shape are your tires in? How cold is it where you are? Did you put Arco gas in your car (or other local gas station known for really bad gas)? Did you load your car up with bricks and friends who have been overeating for 40 years?

Also, considering the day, have you been treating your reindeer well or are they angry?

lol I like the questions.

Yes, using launch control. No, no bricks in the trunk and only me in the car. Fuel is normal 91, not from Arco.

Tires now are not in great shape after 2 track days, but I tried this on fresh tires as well. Road is decent. Not a drag strip or track, though.

Reindeer is fed and happy!

I should probably mention that I'm from Colorado, 1 mile in altitude, but I didn't think that would have such a big effect on 0-60 given the HP on this car.

91 octane is part of the issue. I believe car results are all 93 octane.

Also , your DA will have something to do with it too.

Colorado doesnt help. Not sure if you get a chance to come down from the mile high state, but Im sure if you try it at sea level, youd get a different result.

Your altitude is most of it. I'm at 4000 feet and I've never gotten close to any claimed 0-60 times on any car I've had.

Really? Well, I guess I need to do a road trip to CA next spring.

I guess it's another brownie point for those damn EVs.

Slowest I've run was 3.3s with a bad launch, my best was 2.85s to 60, DA was sitting between 1000-1500 due to humidity and temp since Houston isn't exactly cool, even now

Edit: this was done on the street

An engine loses three percent of its rated power for every 1,000 feet of altitude gained. This is for a non-turbo engine. We have twin turbos so add some more loss and the result is what you're seeing.

Based on this, I'm losing close to 20% power in mile-high altitude... Is this correct?

I believe the opposite is true. Turbos aren't as affected by altitude as NA motors.

Why would we lose power? Are the turbos too small to maintain the required boost pressure?

Yep, Turbochargers were created for prop aircraft to overcome power loss at altitude. Slapping them on cars came a lot later. You're still going to make less power overall at higher altitudes, but the effect isn't as drastic as it is with NA engines. And power below boost threshold is just as affected as an NA engine.

Le Pere biplane. Took off for the first time on July 12, 1919, and later scored a record of reaching 137 mph at 18,400 feet powered by a Liberty aircraft engine using a Moss (guy in suit with hat) built turbosupercharger. The Moss turbo was the precursor of the design GE used for WWII B-17 engines

1941 B-17 4 engines 4 turbos

I'm getting a weird one where sometimes I'm hitting the Rev limiter....in automatic. In one case full throttle and it was like the car went into neutral for a second.
