You do realize nobody is bashing the GT3, right? I think it is universally respected as an amazing machine around here (and practically everywhere else). Looking at your list of cars, it's obvious #1 on my list doesn't apply to you, and that's great. You have over half a million dollars worth of car in your garage, so your perspective is obviously different. You said you don't understand the point of this thread, and well, I can see why.

G8x hit it out of the park! It’s a Jack of all trades sports sedan with supercar-like straight line performance and very good handling. I had to make room for my dream car and had to sell my beloved stage 2 tuned 991.2 GTS. Long story short, we were playing car musical chairs and I ended up in a G80 xDrive as my DD. It was the most practical choice of the bunch at the time. I won’t go into details as I don’t want to be accused of “humble bragging”.
If the need for utility wasn’t an issue, I would go with a 992.1 TT/TTS as DD. If I can only have one car, the Cayenne TGT would be my first choice but the G80 would be in the top 5. The G8x platform is that good, IMO. As always, first world problems! Last edited by nu2M; 04-23-2024 at 08:43 PM.. |

I like what you wrote and agree with a lot of your points.
I think the thing with a GT car is you need to have multiple vehicles, decent leisure time and good roads or semi-close tracks to get value out of them, not to mention some real money to afford all the costs. Simply owning some "thing" is a bottomless pit. I had a 997 GT2 6 Speed, amazing at the time, but it's got a small window of usability. Started going to the track and realized that unless I wanted to really risk crashing it/having it crashed into while working on my level of speed, I needed to consider other cars. But I think the thing for me that tipped selling it was its cost compared to how much use and FUN I was having owning it. Sure, in the right time/place it's so good! Looks great, drives amazing, driver position is best/tied with McLaren, scary fast and wild.. But outside of that- for me- was less fun. Lotta worrying about where you take it and where you park, who you can take with you as it only has two seats, lack of almost all functionality aside from pure sporting event, harsh and loud ride, super low traction in rain, etc. Have had a few M3/M4 since, and sure- it's not a GT Pcar- But in some ways thats a good thing. Almost bought a 992 GT3 this year...How soon one forgets the reality of things and sips from the cups of romanticism...Glad I passed. Like others have said though, it's really an individual case basis. "More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones."- Mother Theresa |

i've had multiple M cars. currently have a gt3, m2 comp, and daily civic.
you are imposing alot of your own beliefs in the post like value, room for kids, how fast you drive on a backroad. many of us do triple digits regularly on back roads and/or dont have kids. its pretty well known that as you move up in the car world you get diminishing returns. Is a $1M bugatti chiron that much better than a $300k 720s ?? not really. but im also not in a position to afford a bugatti. m3 is a better daily than a gt3 thats true... but an accord is a more comfortable and quiet daily than a m3. and it costs less to operate. faces less depreciation over 50k miles. and you drive it without caring. potholes/rock chips etc it doesn't matter. M cars are not the best sports cars or the best daily drivers... its a mix of both. kind of a 7/10 at everything. cars and coffee is not something i care about. i sold my 458 for a gt3 in chalk grey. i definitely dont miss convos and randoms at gas stations or stop lights who know nothing about cars.

My poorly articulated point was don't simply accept what you have now at the expense of the drive to achieve what could you have tomorrow. Don't give up on that GT3 (or whatever car), but also don't make stupid financial decisions to get one. I waited 3 years for my 992 GT3, and if my allocation had been assigned earlier I might have needed to turn it down. The timing simply worked out financially. My point being, it never hurts to dream so you might as well put your name on the list. But NEVER pay ADMs. |

This thread would have been much simpler if you’d stopped at “money is a factor”. Because if it isn’t you have the M car and the GT car and you don’t worry.

I would go from a base or a T to a G80 though.

i think this thread would've been better if instead of GT3 we were comparing it to the base/t/s 911. nobody is cross shopping the GT3 and M3. two very different machines. i daily drove a 991.2 base and found it comfortable but a little tight. nobody dailies a GT3

Personally, I buy my cars based upon how they make me feel! I can have fun in a lot of different cars. Trying not to get too attached to the M3, but it's a great car and more than I need for everything....including the track. Life's short....experience more cars on more twisty roads. Remember its not about the destination it's about the journey.

My last 3 cars (F80 Comp, F80 CS, X3) all got seriously hit in parking lots within the first 3 months of ownership. Never a note, and I was always careful.
I’m in a position now to look at a 911 or maybe 488, but JFC I’d be so paranoid of ever taking it out of the garage. |

I would guess there are plenty of people that are currently in an M3/M4 that are considering a Porsche for their next car. And many of them aren't considering "just" a base or an S... they're looking for a bigger upgrade if they're going to upgrade at all. So no, not necessarily cross-shopping an M3 and a GT3, but definitely considering one as their next car.
Think about it... is it really that unbelievable that the people with the financial ability to buy a $90k-$100k vehicle might not also be able to afford a more expensive vehicle? Especially if youre looking at a used GT3? I know that's my situation and I don't think I'm unique in that at all.

458 everywhere. I try and be smart where I park it but it’s a pile of metal. I do admit, I sweat a bit when I let me nephew drive it:happyanim It makes me happy to see other people enjoy it. That’s what it’s for!! I don’t buy my shit to back it out of the garage look at it and then store it away. To me that’s fucking lame. I buy to drive and enjoy. If it get my nephew laid, even better. Lol. I bought it used. Don’t care at all how many miles it has when or if I ever get rid of it. I do love the 488 but I like the 458 engine better. Best of luck on your search. Make sure you have a guy who can work on your 488. Do not rely on dealers or your going to get ass raped |

If I had $100k for my cars (not counting the wife), I might get a used M3 for $70k and a nice S2000. Or a $50k f80 and a 996 Turbo. A new $50k Golf R and a 997 gen S. Or countless other combinations. |

Porsches are on a different level. They are not comparable to the m3. They drive very different.
The performance benchmarks can and have been similar, and the price for performance makes an m3 a really good choice. If cost wasn’t a factor I think most people would rather be in a 911. Also the gt3 isn’t the dream for everyone, I’d take a turbo s over one any day of the week. |

I'm going to see if I can articulate my thoughts on cars, and people without coming across like a douchebag... For relevance, my wife and I have purchased close to 30 cars in the last 10 years. I get bored with cars very quickly, or just move on to the next bright, shiny thing. I'll hone in on one car in particular... my last Porsche GT3. It was 991.2 GT3 we bought new(ish) in 19, it was an 18. It was then a VERY desirable color, Saphire Blue Metallic, light weight buckets, Carbon ceramic brakes, stick car...BUUUUT what was an oversight to me when we purchased it was it didn't have PDLS with the painted buckets. We added BBI exhaust, HRE R101LW wheels and a couple other things all the while it still had it's new paper plate on it. All in all, about $20k in mods on essentially a new car... but I couldn't get past it not having those painted headlight buckets.
STUPID? Yes, but when you're in the moment, it's a big deal. I could've replaced those headlight assemblies for a few thousand dollars, but it bugged me so much I traded out out that car for another Mclaren after 6 shorts months of ownership. Looking back.... That's the one that got away. It was a special car that I didn't appreciate at the time of ownership. We've had 3 Mclaren's and those we by FAR my favorite cars, period! Anyone who says they're POS's hasn't ever owned one... they're EPIC in every way. 2 Porsche Turbo S' both a 997.2 and an 991.2 both Cool in their own way, as well as 1k hp C7 Corvette, and many, may others... Currently wife's car is an X5M Comp, and our M4 Comp, as well as my Gen 3 Raptor. My point? My point is... Enjoy what you have, dream to own what you want, and aspire to appreciate now as in every time you go for a drive, take moment and enjoy it. Each car has it's cool factor, and quirks. I guarantee there's not a perfect car out there no matter what anyone thinks. If I could pick my right now car it'd be a Mclaren 765LT... Based on my knowledge of their cars and all my friends who still own them, it's not a car that can be "lived" with as a cruiser, or even a run to the store kind of car, but it wouldn't stop me from buying one. Last point... My M4 Comp isn't the perfect spec, but it's a nice car. Would I buy it again? No, and here's why. It was an impulse purchase because we got tired of waiting on our ordered G80, and we said it's a here and now car... so, we bought it. Hopefully someone reading these posts by everyone who's replied to this thread will get some insight based on several testimonials, and make a better decision based on THEIR needs and wants vs wanting to be the big guy at the car meets. Cars are meant to be driven, and appreciated, but ultimately it's an extension of our personalities too. |
