G80 journey with timeline

I have finally began the marathon by adding my name to multiple G80 MSRP waitlists.

Cars have always been a part of my life and i ended up having my career in the automotive industry. Covid gave me an opportunity to consolidate my vehicles and have an opportunity to own a M car. I sold both my vehicles last spring and got a proper family hauler. After a long search, I was able to snag one the last F87 allocations with a nearby dealer for a decent discount. After test driving one, the vehicle was too small for our needs and liking and i cancelled the order immediately. On the same day, that dealer got a G80 in their inventory. Vehicle was not cleaned and it was parked in their fenced lot. I knew that was the vehicle as soon as i saw it. I was not ready to pull the trigger at that point as i wanted to see if the market would cool down as no one knew what was going to happen in the near future.

Last fall, BMW organized the M track day in Indianapolis Motor Speedway and i signed it up as soon as i got to know about the event. Several of my friends came along with me and we had a blast during the entire event. I had an opportunity to explore and experience the capabilities of the G80 and it was super fun.

I have been maintaining a database of dealers who sold vehicles at a good discount from last year. But in the current market, getting an allocation at MSRP might be a decent deal. I dont need this vehicle immediately and was planning to get one towards the end of G80 lifecycle. But MSRP is going to increase with every MY and also i dont prefer the iDrive 8 which might come in with MY23. OEMs are adding more and more tech into their vehicles and i prefer having less tech as i am planning to keep this vehicle for a while.

I contacted several dealers this week and narrowed down a few with whom i am comfortable working with. I added my name in several dealers waitlists yesterday who were selling vehicles at MSRP. Some of them get frequent allocations while others dont. I might contact more dealers in the coming weeks and add my name to their waitlists as well. I am in no hurry to take delivery but i will not add a G80 to the garage if i dont get a MY22 and if MY23 gets iDrive 8. I might pull the plug if BMW decides to remove any of the options which i consider to be a must.

I know its going to be a long marathon. In the end, its not the destination but the journey which matters and i am looking forward.

I am not a fan of manufacturers sticking ipad like screens onto their vehicles especially on a performance vehicle like the Ms. Tesla started this trend and everyone is trying to play the catch up game. Porsche has handled this transition better than all other OEMs. Tesla considers their product as commodities but thats not the way an enthusiast looks at their vehicles.

The way the infotainment screens are integrated onto the dash and removal of physical buttons are deal breakers for me in iDrive 8. I prefer the classic BMW dials in the instrument cluster over the current vertical gauges in iDrive 7 but i can live with that.

Wars would be a lot easier when you know your enemy.

Lack of communication and random content removal by BMW in the recent past would make this really challenging.

😂 Disagree. The destination of being in my garage is the most important part.

Lol, with the current market i am not sure if i will reach the destination with a G80 or a Charger HC.

Journey would have been a lot smoother with the Charger HC but i chose the hard one.

For me, the M3 has been a dream ever since I played NFSMW as a kid. Almost 2 decades later, it is finally time 😤

Did you put deposits down with multiple dealers? Or are they letting you get on the waitlist without a deposit? I am thinking of doing the same but all the dealers want deposits to secure your spot in line and that's going to be a pain in the ass to chase refunds...

Many dealers are willing to add me to the waitlist without any deposit but a few are adamant. So i paid the deposit only to the ones who are most likely to get me an allocation. Some have waitlist from last june and still needs a deposit which is crazy. I didnt bother working with them.

No no it gets worse. I forgot if it was like BMW of roseville or some other trash dealer, but they wanted a 25k markup on a 1 year waitlist wait for an m3

He was asking about the deposit for the waitlist and not the ADM over MSRP. If a dealer says mark up over MSRP, my conversation doesnt last long after that.

Things are really happening.

I was on #3 position with one of my dealers and received my production number today morning. It has only taken 13 days from the time i placed the order and to get my production number.

My SA told me that my rwd order was accepted before the base and xdrive orders in their order bank. Even though i know that M3 allocations can be switched between base, comp rwd and comp awd, i am happy that my order was accepted before others.

Looks like logistics gods are not on my favor. Sat in factory for 5 days before i got on to a train to Bremerhaven. Since then, i have been sitting on the port for the past 3 weeks and missed 5 ships which left to my destination. Its weird that few vehicle builds in the same build week didnt see any of the delays. This delay is nothing compared to several other issues reported here, so i should be good.

1/11 - Order in dealer bank (47)
1/24 - Order accepted, scheduled for CW11 (111)
2/07 - Order accepted, scheduled for CW10 (111)
2/09 - Scheduled for Production, CW9 (112)
2/16 - Production begins (150)
2/24 - Exterior body assembly begins (151)
2/25 - In paint booth (152)
2/28 - Entering Assembly Line (153)
2/28 - Assembly in process (154)
3/01 - Quality check
3/02 - Production completed (155)
3/02 - Ready for transport
3/02 - Awaiting carrier assignment
3/07 - Dispatched from factory (190)
3/11 - At port

You're on the home stretch. I'm still amazed (and slightly jealous) at the turnaround time between order placed and getting your allocation.
