Moonroof or CF roof?
Hi, what's everyone's opinion on getting the Moonroof vs CF roof? I'm not taking mine to the track or anything so the lower center of gravity and the weight savings really wouldn't help me as I'm not taking it to the track. It's just going to be daily. However had moonroofs on most of my cars in the past and honestly maybe I open it once a year.

Moonroof is not even an option i'd consider. I don't see the point of buying an M3 and not getting the CF roof.

It’ll be a personal thing. I live in New England and my favorite moment is opening the sunroof in the spring…especially at night. For some reason it hits a really nostalgic note so sunroofs are a must have for me. I think I heard something like 20% of people opt fir the moonroof.

It’s one less thing to break and here in Central TX, I rarely opened a moonroof. It’s either too hot, too cold or allergy season. |

As others have said, it really is a personal preference. I live in AZ and open mine frequently. I do like the look of the CF roof, but for me it is was more about the ability to open up the roof if I like. If I wasn't planning to use it much, I would have opted for the CF roof.

Definitely personal preference. I've always had one and use it frequently. I'd be hard pressed to buy a car without one. Carbon looks cool but doesn't do much for me.

I have had a sunroof/moonroof (or equivalent) on every car I have owned, including 2 former M cars and my current 997. But, I am getting the carbon fiber roof on my G80.
I do enjoy opening the roof in mild weather when the sun isn't overhead - typically mild evenings in summer or spring. That isn't very often here in ATL. Roof is closed almost all of the time. I thought about it hard when I ordered, but decided on the CF roof with no second thoughts. You should get whatever you want, not what someone else says you should get. It's your car, and you're the one driving it. 99% of people won't notice the difference, and 99.9% won't care.

Agreed on it being a personal choice. Love the extra light in the car and occasional nice weather day. As mentioned above, best of both worlds is to get the sunroof and wrap after. I am planning on the same with my Brooklyn grey

Love moonroofs, use them like crazy when I have one but would never, ever, ever buy/order one when a solid CF roof is available. Plus it will kill resale. It’s just not an option in my mind when something so cool/pure function is available.
Now, I will say that a slick top body color roof is ugly (on non dark colors) and here is where I think the moonroof contrast works well. Plus moonroofs are cool So for me it’s all principle. If you can get the CF, no MR, otherwise get it since it looks better and is a nice feature.

Too many possible problems with a moon roof with leaking, rattles, stuck. It's added weight, reduced head room, it's ordinary, and it looks stupid. Some people like light in the cabin, that does nothing for me personally. CF roof saves some weight in the right place and looks dope. Also higher resale, but that's not a factor for me.

If I wanted a moonroof I'd be driving a G2x.. got one in my SUV and use it 0 times in los angeles. CF Roof is beautiful and i can tell they want you to choose the moon roof as the put it as 'featured' on the bmwusa car builder. CF roof completes the G8x package; I wrapped my old M2C's roof to CF, it's not the same...

moonroof is a must for me. It is open as long as it is above freezing and not raining. The CF roof looks nice but is not something one would miss on the street. If you track maybe it is different and if you do not notice it is there then why bother asking I guess.

I was initially planning to opt for the moonroof as I do like the cabin to get some extra light. I'm going with the CF roof though since I noticed it has two body lines that flow very nicely with the hood and spoiler. These little details make a big difference for me in the appearance of the car.

I got the moonroof and I love having light in the cabin. Can’t imagine having the Cf roof and feeling suffocated.

I've had a moonroof ever since my first car and would not buy a car without one. As others have said in this thread, even at night, even when it's cold, I'll still open up the ceiling because it's a nice. Rolling down the side windows slightly at night on a cold evening is nothing close to just cracking open the sky above my head while I'm sitting in heated seats. During the summer I practically have the roof open 95% of the time.
As for added weight, center of balance issues, blah blah -- unless you are a 1.) die-hard track person and 2.) you know how to drive so well that the few extra pounds will make a material difference with your lap times...the extra weight makes zero difference. If you track once a year, well then the other 364 days you're on the road, in a luxury car, with crazy technology, so you may as well have what you want (if a moonroof is what you want). I've tried to present the case before, but my thinking is to consider two scenarios: I'm 5' 10" @ 170 lbs, bought carbon bucket seats and carbon ceramic brakes, got the xDrive, and also opted for the moonroof. What if a 6' 4" person @ 230 lbs gets in their non-moonroof, non-xDrive, heavy iron brakes + heavier standard seats. The weight and center of gravity differences between these two scenarios will matter only to perhaps the Stig...on a track...on a dry day...at sea level...with new tires...provided they had a good night's sleep. And as for the look, to each their own, but I prefer the body color roof vs carbon fiber. I paid extra for Brooklyn Grey and I enjoy it plastered all over the car.
