BMW M 50th Anniversary Colors?

BMW will be releasing a limited color selection starting March 01, 2022 for their M cars only. This is to celebrate 50 years of M. Does anyone know which colors or if there is an upcharge for them? The article in the URL mentions a few colors but nothing about price.

Interested in this as well.

Am I reading this correctly where it says 50 colors?!? Obviously they only mention a few...has anyone seen a full list? Or have any thoughts on what other colors will be included?

I'm 3rd in line for an allocation so I'm assuming I'll be able to take advantage of this special offer/timing.

https://visualizer.bmw-individual.com/ already features many dozens of paint colors. I was under the assumption that, with enough money/patience/persistence, a buyer could arrange for their new car to be painted however they like already?

... unless this 50th anniversary event will make them available to lower prices? (Though I doubt BMW is looking for a way to save customers money.)

My theory would be that the anniversary colors would still be at an up charge (maybe at reduced prices?) but likely marked as being pre-approved as a part of the anniversary production timeline and then you wouldn't need to get approved by BMW individual to option the color.

Complete guess though…🤷🏻

That's what I'm thinking as well. If you just think of it as similar to Individual, what would BMW be offering? Essentially nothing.

Logic would say they're pre-approved and potentially discounted. But really, who knows

Yeah, that's what I assumed as well - these were more "regular production" colors, rather than having to go Individual.

I know I could have done it individual but I didn't...so very interested to see pricing on an Imola Red option, hopefully. That's the color I fell in love with on the E46, so I would be tempted to trade my Portimao Blue for it, but I'm also very nervous about random feature deletions (touch screen, wireless Android Auto, etc) and not sure I want the LCI (depending on when that happens) if the dash layout is as people expect with the awkwardly integrated wraparound screen...although I should would expect deletion of a touch screen to be pretty difficult with that LCI interface. In any case...decisions, decisions...

100% wild guess here — sounded to me like there will be some sort of deal on the colors (why would this be different otherwise), maybe they’re limiting by model though? Like a few for the M3, others for M5, etc. Who knows at this point. I’m just butthurt to miss out on Imola or Dakar

I like "clear." Charge customers more to avoid the weight of paint. (Worked for AA)

You know, thinking about that, there's a thread where people are proclaiming they would never get the moonroof because they want that CF roof panel. AA had the opportunity to get that super performance unpainted CFRP look on an entire commercial airliner...and didn't jump at the chance?

One observation I have had...

The thing with individual paint is - its main draw is its exclusivity. Hence why imola red (which wasn't that popular when it was readily available as a stock color on the e46) is now sought after, same w/ LSB, dakar yellow, etc.

As such, when these 50 individual colors become more a common place when ordering the car, they will lose its appeal. Case in point, who actually considers frozen white or frozen portimao blue a true individual option? And then the enthusiasts will go for individual colors OUTSIDE of the 50 available.

Some colors they refuse right now like Laguna Seca blue and Interlagos Blue. Perhaps they are bringing retired colors back.

It's very possible and that has been the running theory/rumor.

I must say, I'll be a bit pissed if they bring back LSB. Would have loved to get that color.

According to BMW, "The M division also played an important role in the unprecedented sales growth achieved by the BMW core brand in 2021 thanks to a jump of 13.4% to 163,542 performance vehicles. Naturally, the latest M3 and M4 were quite popular, much like the X5 M and X6 M. In addition, M Performance cars such as the M440i, X3 M40i, and X7 M50i were also a hot commodity."

The way I read this, M division stats included both pure, quasi-M sales such as M140, M240, M340, M440, ...... So my guess is, pure-M sales would be less than half, if even that.

During the 50th anniversary year, M2 will also be arriving late so take off another 10k sales and you have probably 50,000ish pure-Ms being offered 50 additional colours for a year.

Whilst your theory would hold water if this reincarnation of 50 different colours would have an indefinite lifespan, given its only for one year, and only for M variants, you have to ask yourself, "How many Ms will they manufacture in one year"?

Then divide that into 50 portions and you'll realise, there might only be 500 of some of these colour released (given not everyone may want to choose from those 50 colours).

That, in my book, is pretty scarce, given they will never be done again (at least across the Gxx range) for the foreseeable future.

IMHO, the biggest downside on doing individual is the added 3-6 month wait.

If they added a swath of special colors for what is effectively a 3-4 month production window that would still be pretty exclusive. Plus, if it didn't add to the production time it would be pretty tempting, and a nice gesture for those who have been on waitlists for the past few months.

My extra wait was just about 2 months. The majority of the 7 months was waiting for my build week which slid when my individual color was approved. The wait wasn’t as bad as i expected.
