The dreaded rock in backing plate

I took my car out yesterday to add some miles so I could get my break-in service done. Going down the street and all of a sudden, I could hear this horrible sqeall and thought it was coming from the car next to me. Once I figured it was me, I panicked and pulled over. Luckily, I was right around the corner from my dealership and proceeded there, but I was thinking what kind of damage was I doing. I pulled into service bay, and as soon as I pulled in, the f!@@#$% rock popped out. The SA laughed his ass off, and of course, I did too.

Yip. Happened to me with my first F82, just as I was about to panic it was gone as soon as it appeared

Similar here on my G8x, a rock must have gotten stuck in the drilled rotors. It sounded more like rubbing and I thought something was wrong since I just had the winter wheels/tires installed. I called the dealership and was on my way to them to get the foreman to check it out when I had to do hard emergency braking. The noise went away after that. Called them again and they said they'd had another car come in with something similar and it was a small rock pebble.

Happened to me a few weeks back. Just did a hard brake and that knocked it lose and it went away.

I understand you can pull the backing plate back a little to reduce the occurrences. I may do this when I take wheels off for a deep clean in the spring.

Why is it embarrassing?

Dang. Went through this on my F80. Would happen all the time. Very, very annoying. There was a service bulletin issued to change out the backing plates on that car I believe. Once that was done, went away for good. I'll get my G80 in about a month. Hoping not as persistent as it was early on with the F80.

For those posting here (G8x cars only), are you running 19/20s wheels, or 18/19s, or other? I thought this was mostly only an occurrence for the smaller 18/19s?

That was on the summers (826M), which were 19/20.
