Winter washing.. garage anyone?

I'm a hobbiest detailer and starting to think about my winter wash routine. The problem is that my hose is outside and is shut off from thanksgiving through March. Does anyone in the Chicagoland area have a large heated garage with running water good for winter car washes? Maybe you'd be up for starting our own cars and coffee club? I'd love to get a good hand wash in every few weeks to make the car look good and to preserve my coating. I'm happy to bring all the detailing supplies needed.

I need this too! In the summer I do a few washes in the alley trying not to annoy the neighbors too much and also go to a reputable place for hand washes. But I'd like to wash my car myself. I had a dream for the old Mini dealership on Diversey and Sheffield but it became a covid testing site.

I feel for you guys! I’m many years removed from my Lincoln Park days (but at least I had off-street parking).

Nowadays I not only have a heated/cooled garage with epoxy floor, but hot and cold running water — soft, not hard — and ample LED lighting. Perhaps the biggest luxury is space: the 3-car garage only houses our two vehicles and a large kennel for the dogs. Everything else is stored in the shed outside.

(The M4 goes where the X5 is now.)

I also need this! I am looking for a place to wash my car year round in the city of Chicago. I haven’t found very many do it yourself washes in the city close to where I am.

I am thinking about creating another thread similar to this question in attempt to get more responses.

Thanks! Let me know. In all seriousness, for someone who had space, I'm sure we could all donate coffee, breakfast, detail supplies, etc.

I'm in Elmhurst. I have to figure there's someone out here with a giant heated garage.

No doubt! I am trying to find someone in the city ideally but I would take something anywhere at this point.

So crazy idea… I was looking into getting a bunch of people together to rent a heated warehouse/garage space in an industrial park. I'm sure there are a lot of vacancies right now.

Was trying to figure out how to message you directly (still new to understanding how to use the forum), but what is the build of your M3?

Have you tried ONR? Easy to do in the garage and you don't need water other than what's in the bucket

I do like ONR and I've gotten great results from it. IMO there's no substitute for a hose wash in removing the salt and other particles from areas other than the body panels.

How does this stuff work when I have a deep layer of salt on my car in the winter? Is it more for just surface dirt?

There's a DIY wash located at Grand and Oakley in the city near Smith Park. I've never tried it, but it seems to be busy every time I pass by.

I just came across this cordless power washer.

You could fill a bucket in the house with warm water if the pipes are frozen.

Pretty cool. I might get one myself for rinsing off the salt and grime in between proper washes.

Pretty cool if it works well

Edit:watched a video review and seems like it's not powerful enough really to wash off really baked on bugs and stuff.

My method for winter is going to a coin operated car wash. Use their pressure washer to clean off the salt. Bring the car home and do a ONR wash.

I basically dilute a small amount of ONR into a 5 gallon bucket. Grab a couple of microfibers and clean off the car 1 by 1. Then dry each panel as I wash it.

How about a hose hooked up to the drain valve at the bottom of your hot water heater. Hose goes out the basement window and to the pressure washer. Hot wash in winter gets the salt off quickly.

Other tips:
- Mist the glass from a distance first, so it can warm up a little. I haven't cracked any glass doing a hot wash but I'm careful.

- Leaf blower from top down to blow most water off.

- Wipe down with some detailing spray so you stay clean longer. Dad still uses Pledge lemon furniture polish on his black British racer. Looks like black glass! I've got Kenotek Showroom Shine (now discontinued, but flawless gloss).

I used to do this a while back but was scared it was taking off some of the coating applied(wax).

DIY bays announcement starts at 1:45. Hopefully they can open by the next winter.
