Damaged dashboard

Ok rephrasing this post:

How much of a pain in the ass is it to replace the dashboard? My leather that sits under the windshield got damaged so I’m trying to see how big a project this is from someone with firsthand experience. Any problems you guys encountered and would you talk me out of it? I’m pretty mechanically inclined and I’d def want to do it myself.

8-10 hour job IF you know what your doing. If just mechanicaly inclined I’d bet is is a 16-20 hour job. I personally would never consider doing this. Patch if it’s cracked and move on.

What sort of damage did you incur? I sustained a gash on my dash when I had my dash cam installed; I took it to the dealer and they said there was no cost effective way to replace the entire dash. I found a shop that specializes in leather repair they were able to mend it in a couple of hours for $200.

Water damage from tint solution overspray. Both corners of dash. My A pillar trim were soaked

Any idea on how to get the pesky stains from whatever solution the installer used? I tried water on a microfiber and no matter how hard I go, it doesn’t come out of the leather and trim. Ridiculous. Wtf is in the solution they use?

I would think they use a soap solution. Perhaps leather cleaner followed by leather conditioner would help.

If you had a professional shop do it they should make it right.

A) I'd try leatherique prestine clean. If this doesn't get it back to normal, nothing will

B) a leather shop can do a re-dye for you, and it'll be virtually unnoticeable. This does not merit a dash replacement

C) this shop you used should be paying for the fix.

yeah, i'd be in someone's face right now. on top of labor, a new dash is a few K, and there's a solid chance it'll rattle and creak going forward.

They said to give it a week for it to settle down and they offered to pay for a new dash if’s not gone. It’s still raised after a day and I don’t think it’s going away. I don’t think a dye job would do much.

I was livid but kept my cool and was polite although it was REALLY hard bc I specifically asked them to be careful with the leather. He ensured me prior to starting that towels are laid down and that he doesn’t use that much spray anyway.

I was not notified that anything went wrong and was left to discover this on my own. Thank god I didn’t just drive off.

The kicker is that this $106,000 car is a WEEK OLD WITH 1k miles…. I do NOT want anyone ripping into the dash and scuffing other things up in the process. Options? The owner joking said that he’d get me a new car thru his insurance. Is this even feasible?

Geez man. Sorry this happened, but yet another reason why I have trust issues with ANY shop these days. It’s bullshit man, nobody gives a fuck about people’s stuff anymore and there’s too many bullshit shops around. So tired of seeing stuff like this happen to people. I’d rather have no tint than risk this shit.

i mean shop owner should be the expert here. did he have an opinion on how to fix this? other than being glib? if not, (and I Am Not A Lawyer :tm but this feels like actionable negligence.

I don't see that dash swelling going away. I don't think you're going to be able to do anything with that. I definitely believe that this is going to be a dash replacement. It doesn't make much sense that anything a tint installer would use, would do something like that. Most use a mix of baby shampoo and water.

There have been a couple threads like this. Sadly, it seems none of them went back to normal.

Either the swelling did not go down, or they could see discoloration or BOTH. If you only see discoloration, you might try leather cleaner or even a magic erasure.

Thank you for your empathy, really appreciate it. Yeah I’d rather go tintless than deal with this, 100000%

He said give it a week, if no change, then he’ll pay for the dash to be replaced in addition to another door panel he damaged.

Thing is I REALLY don’t want someone else tearing into my brand new $106k car a week into ownership. So dash replacement is a hard no from me.

What’s that leave us with? Cash settlement or a new car? Should I lawyer up?

Doubt he used baby shampoo. Entire car reeked of some artificial cherry scent and the new car smell that I love was entirely gone when he was done.
