I'd assume BMW wants this car to apply to most, if not all, enthusiasts. G series M3 and M4 might be looked at as M5's little cousins while M2 is the true agile driving thriller. Gotta test drive em all but M2 I'm genuinely excited for knowing that it's on the right track looks wise.
Doubt it will have M xDrive

Wishful thinking

BMW, if you're listening...

Don't mess this car up! Been a loyal customer for 20yrs and have purchased multiple models (all new) in that time. Don't like the new direction of the 4, M3/4, etc. If the G87 gets screwed up (big ugly grille, excessive weight/size gain, etc.) I'll be hanging up my bimmer keys for good.

Looks like you are getting the size increase, both length and weight.

It's awesome when people have sports cars with child seats in the back

I wouldn't expect any center rear seat spot

The M4 doesn't even have one

Two are off boosters so just a seatbelt in the middle will do for me

There is no belt in the center unfortunately

Wait it out, the second these things drop so will the price of current m2's.. ($20k for OG M2) don't waste your money right now specking out a car that rides on a 5 year old chassis
You're in the market for an M2c now. Why wait 2 plus years. M2c is fantastic. You only live once enjoy today and worry about the new model when it comes out.

I agree, nobody is asking for a larger car. F30 size was fine but look at the G20, it's now a midsize car. This car took me awhile to adjust to from the sheer size. It's the largest car I have ever owned and don't really care for anything bigger. They keep moving them up one size for no reason.

I'm told, the reason why cars keep getting bigger is in part due to strict emission control regulations from EU.

Apparently, the CO2 emission is measured against metrics such as size/mass of the vehicle.

I think US regs are similar.

I agree, specifically the weight. I'm getting a G80, and I love everything they did with it in terms of styling and the fact that they kept the manual boxes well for their continued commitment to enthusiasts. I'd be on the Porsche forums because my loyalty is to the transmission, and not the brand.

I don't understand the weight gain...

The G87 may just be a reincarnation of the E92, 2 doors, good engine, and just a plain ol good time

I'd hope it's a little shorter. I loved my E92 but it definitely wasn't a small coupe.

Good engine? It sounded great, but my 2011 e92 M3 had the tick of death at 25k as my bearings went to crap.

This is making things really challenging. I've been waiting to buy an M2 since they came out. I'm about to get a current one or Supra, but have been putting off due to the current M2 interior looking like a 10 year old car, poor mileage, S55 associated costs, and cost of upgrades. The Supra mostly due to it not being a manual.

Now, I have to decide to wait ANOTHER 2 years??!?! I think at this point I'd buy it regardless of how it looks, but what am I going to do for 2 more years!? This thing is going to be awesome.

BMW needs to consider things that will make this car enticing for many types of drivers, not just "hard core" enthusiast. There are a lot of people who purchase these cars that support the genre of M cars who are not "hard core" enthusiast. Without those people, the M genre could not support itself with only "Hard Core Enthusiast". Just my opinion.
These people buy the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6...

Leave the M2 to be the only 'pure' M car in the whole of M's line up

M3, M4, X3, X4 has the xDrive with the S58

With xDrive they need to add a front diff, a transfer case, drive shafts, fluids...all these extra weights = no thanks

Further down the track it will be $$$ to maintain and fix them when the factory warranty runs out

With all due respect, half of your complaints will not change with the new model.

I want the focus to continue to be in driving dynamics...and for crying out loud, improved steering!

I'd be good with a small bump in HP to like 415. Just make this thing awesome to drive with a good sounding exhaust. And maybe a better sounding HK stereo.

Edit: and good call out above. I noticed that front overhang as well and do not like. makes me wonder how planted the vehicle could feel with such a short wheel base relative to the body length
Cause you drive slow just kidding but go onto the track section and see how many track rats mod for horsepower on the OG and you get the idea...

Hell I even find my M2C slow even though I am not after horsepower.

Practically, it has to be competitive against the current and upcoming range of performance cars. A90 Supra, RS3 and A45 aside, it makes no sense for BMW to charge a 50%+ premium on the M2 over the 400Z, STi and Civic type R while only offering a similar level of straight line performance. I am sure all the aforementioned cars upcoming are going to have great driving dynamics. The current Supra and A45 certainly has it.

I agree with you that the driving dynamics has to be a focus but both great handling and acceleration prowess are attributes on the performance chart that they need to make strides on. One must not neglect one for the other.

Start of production of the G87 M2 is scheduled for December 2022.

Back in 2016, some folks had to wait many months to get the keys of the highly anticipated original F87 M2. There were waiting lists and markups in some regions. And back then there was also the appealing F80 M3 and F82 M4 around as premium alternative.

It goes without saying that late 2022 we may also expect high anticipation for the second generation M2 after a painstakingly drawn out hype in 2021-2022. Combine this with something different compared to 2015-2016 that may even draw more attention to the G87 M2: the boat-sized G80 M3 and G82 M4 with its 'peculiar' design will be around (maybe already an LCI [life cycle impulse]).

So, realistically speaking, make that 'someday in 2023' at the very earliest for you. And as you know, it's still the dreadful 2020 as we speak. You can still get an M2 Competition or M2 CS and enjoy those cars in the very near future, knowing exactly what to expect from those 'final design stage' M2 cars.
