Lost 40% of tread in 1300 miles?

I'm on winter tires now but I was rechecking the dealer invoice to remember what it cost to do wheel/tire swap + storage. And I noticed that they said the summer tires (stock PS4S) were down to 3.6mm. That was at 2500 miles. Then I went and checked the invoice for the break-in service that I did at 1200 miles, and it says 6mm.

I'd measure the wear myself but the tires are in storage.

Am I crazy? Is something going on here? 6mm to 3.6mm in 1300 miles seems impossible. Never tracked it, launched it probably 5 times but otherwise don't drive it hard or drift/burnout/etc. The occasional highway pull, you know how it goes . PLUS the stock tread is 7.5mm and I drove full grandma mode during break-in. Going 7.5mm to 6mm in 1200 miles just seems wrong.

Maybe an alignment problem? Obviously I know the car eats tires but this seems super excessive. Am I crazy or is this to just be expected?

Could be an alignment issue. Mine lasted about 14k before I got flush with the wear bar. And that’s with a lot of canyon driving.

I’d double check yourself when you get a chance.

Yeah I'll definitely check them when I swap them. I have an oil change in two weeks so I'll probably have them look at the alignment too?

I feel like alignment is unlikely because the winter tires are wearing very normally. They start at 9.5 (This is 32nds now) and I'm measuring them all at 8.5 after 3500 miles. And I've definitely been driving harder on the winters as I've gotten more comfortable/confident driving the car. Honestly just kind of puzzled. The wear on the summers seems impossible. I'm almost leaning towards a tech typo-ing on the invoice or measuring it wrong or something. Who knows.

Get a depth gauge and measure yourself, this can't be correct (ask to bring one out of storage).

Garage List
Are we mixing mm with 32nds, here? 6mm is about 7/32nds.

Measure yourself across all 3 spots , the middle and both sides. Too easy for others to measure wrong (and maybe getting you to buy tires)

Winter tires are going to be a harder compound, so even with your alignment off a bit, they won’t wear as fast. So, you can’t compare that.

I thought winters were softer to avoid going hard in cold weather. They certainly move around more than the summers though this could also be the higher sudewall 😀

No, the compound is different and stays pliable in colder temps than summer tires. They’re squirmier due to the softer and usually taller sidewall. The chunkier and smaller footprint tread blocks also contribute a little to this feeling too.

If your toe settings are off, you can destroy a new set of tires extremely quickly. You could easily wear out a tire in 2000 miles. Most people are concerned about running too much camber but it’s really excessive toe that they should be worried about. You’re basically dragging the tires sideways down the road with excessive toe.
