2023 vs 2024 MY Exhaust Sound Difference?

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the exhaust sound between '23 and '24 MY M3/4 competiton?

A friend went to test drive a MY24 M4c and thought the sound was noticably lower and with less burbles than my M4. She asked about it and the salesperson said that yes, they have made it less loud, and less exciting.

I asked her afterwards if sound control was on, she said yes. My theory is that she was driving it with engine in efficient or sport vs sport plus that I usually drive mine in and that the salesperson did not know what they were talking about.

Does anyone know? Thx.

A couple thoughts…..

1) I’d ask the sales person for the documentation where it can be found that the exhaust note changed.

2) Yes, it was probably just not in Sport+ (valves more open).

3) Exhaust systems “break in” over the first 10,000 miles or so. I’ve noticed my own system sounds louder now (12,000 miles) than when new.

There's no change, salesperson has no idea what they're talking about.

Something about the two driving configurations was different. Either Sound Control off, not in Sport+ (Sport and Sport+ do sound slightly different), one had ASD coded out, or something.

No physical or software changes, stock.

99% of salespeople don’t sell cars because they are into cars, it’s for the money. Guarantee it wasn’t in Sport+ and the CA has no clue.

This. So many people think that because they sell the cars they are fans and owners of them. It's a pay check for them. They don't give a shit and their product knowledge is about as deep as a puddle.

I have a 24 M4 and I swear the exhaust is not as loud as my 21 was.

So nobody can confirm any changes from 23/24 correct? I thought keeping the Exhaust button on keeps the flaps open...but you guys are saying it has to be in sport or track to get more sound/Burbbles?

Anyone with just the midpipe & can say its a big difference than just stock setup

The button only effects the sound inside the cabin, it has nothing to do with the flaps.

So you cant basically get them to open unless you are sport or track... thought that was what the button is for

Sport(+) engine mode is what opens the flaps. The button on the console has nothing to do with exhaust flaps.

However, even that doesn't open the flaps completely, only at high load/high RPM. The only ways to have them completely open all the time are either with a physical tool that forces them open, or a valve controller.

The center console button is *only* to control parts of the ASD functionality (fake sound).

The center button also impacts the exhaust flaps. I wonder if the difference people are hearing is due to a software version difference. I remember some people commenting that some of the exhaust sounds changed a bit after an update.

The best way to experience a louder exhaust would be to get an exhaust valve controller installed. That way they can be fully opened 100%. I believe even in sport+ the OEM only opens to around 70% but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will correct me. Try a valve first. If that is still not the sound you are going for most people will get a single midpipe in conjunction with the valve controller.

I have no idea what "influenced" means but the flaps do not change position when the button is pressed vs not. Maybe they open faster at lower throttle/RPM, but keeping them open or not does not have to do with the button.

I think it will keep them closed more often if the button is pressed to keep the outside noise level down too. It will still be variable based on throttle input and speed, but overall quieter both inside and out.

In my experience the sound control button makes a difference on the exhaust sound from the outside of the car in all three engine settings - efficient vs sport vs sport plus. Even in sport plus when the sound control is off, the exhaust is a little mutted from the outside compared to sport plus with sound control on.

I am not sure what the mechanics are behind this and how the flaps are programmed but that's what I experienced at least with my '23 G83.

My experience is completely in line with the description in the screenshot you attached. I frequently use the sound control button to lower the exhaust sound in residential areas regardless of the engine setting.

I concur. It seems that both the drive mode (efficient/sport/sport+) and the exhaust button have some impact on noise level both inside and outside. The exact mechanics of this interplay are not well understood.

I dont know exactly how the button works either. However, I only run the car in sports plus, with a valve controller with valves fully open, and the exhaust button not illuminated. I also have asd coded off.

If I push the exhaust button in the console to where it's illuminated, the only change that occurs is burbles in the actual exhaust are turned on. I'm not a burbles fan, so I always leave it off.

The exhaust flaps are controlled via driving modes. They are closed in comfort, slightly opened in sport and around 70-80% opened in sport+. Regardless of the mode, the console button controls the fake sound on the inside as well as the burbles.
