RaceChip GTS vs JB4

I know that JB4 is the objectively more powerful option when you incorporate custom tunes and ethanol, but for a (reliable) moderate power bump, which product does the job better?

Being a former JB4 owner on another car, I know how it works and how there are all sorts of extra sensors that it taps into and how you can log the car to make sure its running good. That's the main argument JB4 guys use against the RaceChip.

I'm thinking that you can also log the RaceChip by using Bimmerlink and can confirm if the map is running good on your car.

I live in ACN so I'll primarily be running pump 91 from Chevron/Shell/76 and might sometimes throw in 2-3 gallons of E85 to bring it roughly to E30 so I can run Map 7 on the RaceChip or Map 5 on the JB4.

I didn't have an overall great experience with JB4 on my old car so that's why I'm leaning more towards RaceChip, but I want to hear opinions from all across the board to make the best informed purchase.

Thanks

The result is the same for a stock car with 91 octane. They both add a boost to increase power and the amount of PSI is similar in both options.
when using E85, the JB4 will make more power

You will lose out on the extra JB4 features, but you already know and are okay with it.

My main question is if the RaceChip is safe; I know that Ben at RGSport helped RaceChip develop their US tune for the G87 so hypothetically it should be safe even with 91 octane but obviously the inability to log without a third party software is a little worrying. Since you carry both, what's your opinion on the RaceChip as a "set and forget" piggyback and what map do you recommend for us ACN guys?

yes, the race chip is safe.

I recommend keeping it on the default map as you mentioned, since you cannot datalog when you are going over default you can never be sure that the car is handling the extra boost well.

Is this confirmed running bimmerlink to datalog with racechip? I'd have a hard time running a tune without being able to datalog somewhat easily.

I had the JB4 tuning box for my 2019 M240i and I thought it did well. And the burger tuning guys were all very helpful when I had questions. I ultimately switched to MHD, mostly because my DME was unlocked so why not flash tune instead.

I like you am debating between the Racechip and the Jb4. I'm leaning towards Jb4 because of more flexibility and the ease of data logging.

How much of a HP bump does the default map make? Is the +90 hp/tq from map 7?

Yea I’d love an explanation on this… is that 90hp 90 torque on the default map 5 or map 7 or what??? I have ran my on map 7 since I had installed it and the only way I’ve confirmed that it’s putting more power down is with the cars g meter on a 3rd gear pull but I have no clue how much each map is adding.

Can't say because Race Chip does post how much boost they are adding with each map but their map 5 is usually close to the JB4 map 1

Damn that’s frustrating. So is the default map 5 or map 1?

@mike@x-ph.com - any thoughts on high altitude running 91 octane? As-in front range CO? I had a JB4 on my 135i and ran into some stuttering and some issues on occasion. I did work with JB4 support and did a lot of logs stuff but still would get some stuttering on occasion. Or was it a JB3? What was out circa 2010?

My local shop in Scottsdale just quoted 2.5 hours for a JB4 installation on our F22.
Seems a bit much.

Opinions invited.
TIA

I knew you’d be watching.

Honestly, I’m just trying to add a little juice without going full tilt.

Anyway, I’ve seen the videos on YouTube and read the chatter here but really don’t want to do this myself; 2.5 hours seems excessive.

Solving differential equations is easy for me, mechanical work OTOH is basically Greek.

I hear ya. Many years ago I used to build my cars but that was old school American muscle cars with Holley 750 DPs. Most electronic parts was an MSD ignition. It was all mechanical, adjusting my roller rockers with feeler gauges.

Now, with these cars, I am paying my friend's shop to do the work.

I did mucho work on my classic and muscle cars way back when but now opening the hood on our F22 and G87 clearly illustrates I don’t belong there.

Funny story- when we bought our first F22 a few years back I spent a good 30 minutes looking for the dipstick. Duh…

I spent about 45 minutes installing mine. Most of it was spent finding a clever way to route the lengthy cables and getting that lower connector off.

I installed the Jb4 on my previous F22 in about an hour after watching some Youtube videos. Installs there after (when I would remove it for dealer service visits) it was about a 15 to 20 minute process. 2.5 hours labor isn't a crazy unreasonable quote. Just gotta decide either figure out yourself or with a helper, or pay what $400 bucks for install?

Inexperienced JB4 installers will overcharge because they are worried that since it's an aftermarket part, there will be some issues with the installation. The jb4 installation will not take 2.5 hours.

I recommend telling the mechanic that you will pay precisely how long it takes them to install it, which will end up half that time, even if it's their first installation.
