Remote Cold Start Idle?

Past couple of days I’ve been remote starting from my phone 5-10 minutes before I leave so the car warms up in 5 minutes of driving and is cold when getting in.

Curious if there’s any verified negative effects of consistently cold starting with 5 minutes of idle or if it’s superstition.

Who even would have started this superstition. Ridiculous.

It's not an issue.

That’s what I was thinking until I had the thought and googled it. Almost every article had negative this or that.

Don’t see how it could do anything besides use gas

Don't know about superstition but car gets up to temp much quicker driving it easy than sitting there idling for 5 minutes. Plus all the other fluids like diff fluid, tranny etc

Just make sure it’s not being started in an enclosed space! Carbon monoxide poisoning is a thing!

sadly only at night.

By warming up the car I meant getting oil to 210 as even in 90° weather it takes miles and I’m too impatient on my 3 mile drive home from work

Haha the rumours on the internet. Remote start specifically serves a very important purpose during cold times. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it does not ruin your car in any way.

Idling your cold engine is probably the worst thing you can do to it.

Wish we had a "not appreciate" or "don't listen to this person" button on these forums. Would help a lot.

I'll say this. My buddy has a 2019 Tacoma that he NEVER drives far because he has a work truck (cop) but he had to move it in and out of his garage every day to swap cars for a couple years and it eventually seized the motor with like 3,000 miles on it LOL!

I bust his ass all the time for being the only person to kill a Tacoma engine in under 300K miles! He was under warranty and they replaced the engine for free but explained it was the constant cold starts and no oil flow that killed it.

That being said you are bringing the car to temp and driving it, he wasn't. You'll be fine.

Absolute 100% bullshit. Even if you treat the engine like garbage, there's no way cold starts would have killed the engine in 3000 miles. There was definitely some defect with it.

300+ startups a year while only letting the engine run for 1 minute can 100% damage it. Theres no time for oil to reach the top end, the rings to expand, bearings get lubed, etc. But ok, don't believe it. I really don't care.

You claim that he was the one that killed it with his constant cold starts without letting it get to temp. If that was the case, dealer would have thrown this under wear and tear or improper usage and not covered it under warranty. I don't believe that for a second, sorry.

Any good mechanic will tell you that warming up your engine before driving is a good thing. It also warms up the trans too.

Even on my F-bodies (3, all without remote start), I would start and idle them at least 5min to warm up.

All of this "warm up the car before driving" is all leftovers from pre-direct-injection cars where it made more of a difference, but it's just not the case anymore.

As long as the car is on for 30 seconds to a minute with how advanced technology is nowadays, it's fully lubricated and can be driven without issue. I probably still wouldn't push it until it's fully warmed up, but it's definitely not going to cause any issues long term if you don't let the car warm up fully before driving it.

You guys don’t drive like I do. I want the car warmed up before I head out and step on it.

Do we need to wait for the car to get all the way to middle oil temp (210 degrees F I think) before smashing on it?

I usually wait until the oil temp goes into the "white" (as opposed to "blue" = cold) before going over 3k rpm.

Posting also to follow the thread as I have also heard conflicting reports on starting the engine and letting it idle cold. My commute to work is about 5 minutes, so I'm usually *just* moving from blue to white on my oil temp by the time I park at the office, and it is almost never up to full/middle oil temp of 210 F.

Not an issue at all. I wouldn't worry about it.

Actually it’s a huge issue. So many cold starts and not getting the oil up to temp causes moisture in the oil not to be burned off.

Very true. For those who live 5min from work, on the weekend you should take a “fun spirited drive” for good maintenance purposes.
