Wow I was completely wrong on the back filter being hotter than the front filter.

This car has some good air flow under the hood.

I still think these will not fare as well in the summer heat. I think a retest in summer would be a good idea as well.

Great Post Jimmy!

Cold day, 38F ambient temp, car sat in driveway to warm up 10min. Then I cruised easy for 5mi in Efficient to my local Wawa, snapped the BM3 pic as I arrived, and jumped out with my temp gun.

First temps, parked after an easy warm-up:
45F Ambient
60F IAT
217F Coolant
55.1F front air cone, middle of top
55.2F rear air cone, middle of top
95.9F front air cone, low edge by turbos
74.8F rear air cone, side edge by turbos

Then I put the engine into Sport mode (not plus, in case that triggered fans to Max Cool) and did some highway stuff in S3 to stay around 5K RPM and with 7-15PSI boost on the dash indicator.

Second temps, after a little highway fun:
46F Ambient
60F IAT
215F Coolant
55.1F front air cone, middle of top
55.2F rear air cone, middle of top
95.9F front air cone, low edge by turbos
74.8F rear air cone, side edge by turbos

I’d say these don’t heat soak too bad.

This post definitely changes perspective on options since I am currently juggling a few for intakes. Thank you!

I was looking at a couple of front mounts, like MAD, RK Tunes, or BMS drop in filters. I really like the asthetic of Project Gamma, but idk pricing wise (I know they’re quality). Just don’t want to burn a hole in my pocket.

I used both types of intake, front and top position.

Front intakes will get you the coolest air, the top mount intakes are closer to the driver so you can hear them more.

Both excellent, its just a matter of preference and choosing the brand that you like best and fits your budget

All front mounts are roughly going to sound pretty much the same. To get the most sound you will want to have a tune which increases the boost and using the pedal properly to load the motor to create boost and back off to get that pshh sound.

I do have a set of silicone RK front mounts but will use those for racing needs (coolest air). I haven’t tried those yet since the bumper has to come off.

These look really good. The price is almost too reasonable. Might have to pick up a set.

Obviously not front mounted but if you’re stock and checking out intakes here’s what I did. All factory piping with thermal wrap on the shorty, K&N filters…

That is a less expensive way to upgrade the intake but you are keeping the plastic factory piping (I believe is also smaller than most aftermarket brands) and you using K&N filters which are not known to be loud.

I had the ARM intakes installed last night super easy bolt on! Took about 15 minutes!

The sound is absolutely amazing! Definitely audible with windows up and driving and sound even better with windows down. Highly recommended. Order with mike@x-ph.com and arrived super quick within a few days!

Only the BMW gods know, it's sitting at the port in the motherland. A couple west coast US bound ships arriving over the next couple weeks so fingers crossed mid Feb-early March.
