Either M4 CSL engine makes much more power than advertised or that Alfa has huge design issue…
100kg weight is a big advantage atleast in rolling and Alfa failed to take this benefit …

Same can be said about the regular Giulia Quadrifoglio and the M3 comp. M3 comp probably makes closer to 550-575 which means the CSL makes 600+. The Alfa probably is overrated at 510.

Yeah different experience than the past for sure, but oddly I have more fun this way. There’s good challenge in trying to set your own personal best by fiddling with your tune and setup. I’ve been having a blast with that in the M4 and it’s harder than it sounds fighting for hundredths of a second. Meanwhile I’ve had my Z4M for over 10 years now and never really cared much about launching that car. I’m sure some of that is due to the S54 having no ballsack, but I also felt like I was abusing the car/clutch trying to get the best out of it from a dig. I don’t get that nagging feeling in the M4.

I acknowledge, when you have the car for only a few hours, it's hard to find the Goldilocks moment that quickly
Based on my small 231 mile sampling owning this thing, this is far and away the most accurate journalist review:

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/4-series/358922/new-bmw-m4-csl-2022-review?amp
Agree with you there ScullyD

I think too many people, far too often, underestimate BMW. Like every manufacturer, BMW has its days. But somehow, just when you think BMW's lost the plot, out comes another piece of "driving" magic.

///M4CSLicious

I can't wait to hear more from you; for as an owner, I value your opinion far more than I do any reviewer with a handful of hours behind the wheel.

Huh? Its a 21 year old engine. And it had a pretty big "ballsack" back in 2001.

Yep, a modern day Camry will beat it at any stop light, but who wants to drive a Camry.

That said, I agree that there's something to being able to use the pre-programmed abuse mode without the angel on the shoulder flashing a clutch replacement bill in front of you every time you a use the Z4M.

I like to think of him as the benchmark of the common driver. If it takes a good driver to launch a car properly then you know most won't be able to.

I love my S54 dearly and will never sell it. I’m aware of the engineering they went through to give it some low-end torque while being a top-end screamer at the same time. It’s a masterpiece — an exquisite, finely tuned instrument that can be savored even at idle. That said, it never provided the kind of shove that you would get from some other options even in its era, like an LS1 or some of the turbo Japanese stuff. Mine is full catless, intake, tune, etc and with 4.10 gears and still doesn’t pin me into the seat by any means. And that’s fine, it’s not that kind of car. That’s all I mean by lack of ballsack. Iirc even the guys with VF570 superchargers are only hitting mid-12s

I’m glad you phrased it that way, that symbolism with the shoulder angel perfectly captures it

Yes, oversquare design with long stroke despite revving to 8k. Not many engines like this. In my opinion, S54 is the best BMW mass produced street car engine ever made. Look at what crap was out there in 2001 like you said. I drove the final Nissan VQ37VHR in the 370Z and it had a bit more power but wow it just felt like garbage compared to S54, and that was 9 years later.

I never felt like launching the Z4M was too abusive on the clutch. It was a pretty easy launch for a manual car IMO. The part I was always worried about was the shift into 2nd. That transmission will grind and do all kinds of horrible things if you slam it into second.

Agreed It's bespoke and a quasi race engine design. Unlike modern M engines.

I always find those two characters entertaining. As for the drag races, I can take it or leave it as they are irrelevant in the real world.

How do you mean? Like, inconsistent? Anecdotally, of the 4 times I've tried it on my car, it's worked all 4 times without a hitch.

A bit difficult I would think to pilot a hi HP car properly and as fast as you can when your driving with one hand, having a conversation with a walkie talkie, cracking jokes, looking over at the other driver etc. Perhaps if both drivers actually concentrated on driving. Sheesh!!

Exactly, because the guy is a journalist not a youtuber/instagrammer.

And not just a regular columnist in PRINT magazines, but chief/senior road tester for more than 20 years. That gives him perspective and his undeniable skill allows him to comprehend a car as a whole.

Youtube is great compared to static magazine pictures but remember that carwow started out and probably still is a buyers guide for bargain hunters, even though this Matt guy is a funny dude.

FFS, it's a straight line and all he has to do is press one pedal; how hard could that be
