Can someone clarify exactly what happens if you step out of a contract? I assume these are designed to suit the manufacturer / dealer, so all the obligation is on the buyer (me) to find another buyer or go through with the transaction.

My car has the following specs:

M3 Competition XDrive
Black Sapphire paint
826 wheels black
Kyalami orange interior
Carbon interior trim
No sunroof

Options are:
M Carbon buckets
Remote engine start
Heated seats
Sun protection glazing

On road price was $176,819

Given the market I assume I can probably just reallocate to someone else if they are happy with the specs.
That's a really good price. You should definitely try and sell it privately. M3X in Melbourne is closing in on $200k with little options.

On Road

On roads in Tasmania are significantly cheaper than Victoria

The dealers I've spoken to can't even tell me when the build allocation will be.

I've been quoted "anywhere from April to September 2023, though most likely in June".

How have others gone with their orders?

this is accurate - no dealer has an allocation sooner than Jan build. the ones saying they dont know when you will get the car, means they dont have an allocation

Does anyone know how dealers without allocations get… erm… allocated an allocation?

they put the order in and the factory then tells them when the allocation is - if they dont know, they dont have a production slot they can accces. If they dont have a Jan/Feb slot, they aint getting a car in australia till June earliest

So if they don't have a slot, they just don't know until one just randomly opens up for them one day?

That'll explain why everyone is quoting June delivery already

pretty much - they place the order and it sits in status 147 (which just means production not confirmed) their stock controller eventually will then get get allocated a build/production week for that order and thats when they will know when they will actually get the car allowing 3 months from production week until customer delivery. Most dealers i know for a fact dont even have Jan production slots now either.
