Is discount tire a good option?

I’m driving down from Canada going to Miami. I’m switching my winters to summers halfway. The bmw dealerships I’ve contacted have insane prices to change tires on the same wheel. It’s twice price from my local dealer in Montreal. I called a discount tire on my route and they said they have done a bunch of m3, m4 with stock and after market wheels. And they have a contactless tire changer, so that eases my mind about scratches.

Basically my question is, I have no experience with discount tire. Are they a solid choice to have my tires changed? Or do they have a bad reputation?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Finally I can answer with plenty of experience. I have used Discount Tires for about 16 years and over 20 cars and trucks. I have never had a problem, stuck wheels tires, aftermarket HRE, BBS, Hamman and others.. only one time and they send the wheel to be repaired without any issues.

I think you will be OK..

They are solid. They also have Hunter Road Force Elite balancers, which most places do not have.

I ordered my Conti DWS06+ winter set thru them and had no issues with install or anything. They have done wheels and or tires on a number of my cars at various locations and I have not had any issues. I just always ask the obvious “please be extra careful”.

You will honestly be fine unless they hired a new guy but that can also happen at a dealership. You will still be fine because both usually will stand by their work.

I work at a dealership and 85% of the time we hire/contract a mobile service that sits in our back lot when we have tire work that does all ours and they are very experienced. We have a separate guy that fixes bent rims or curb rash.

The mobile service is 25$ a tire for regular tires and performance cars low pro wide or custom is 35$ a tire

i was hesitant but i went with them to mount and balance my forged reverse-mount wheels. i made sure they were aware of the reverse mount and that they wouldnt have any issues first. came out perfectly. another positive with them is they repair flats for free granted the tire can be saved like a clean nail hole

Personal experience with Discount Tires:

Have always used them since '06 when I got my Subaru STI in WR Blue and Gold BBS. At that time, they decided to use lip-weights (right terminology???), instead of the stick-ons. Ruined my tires by putting a scratch where the weights go.

But because their pricing and service is otherwise outstanding, I just kept going to them and just make sure I have a quick chat with the technician before they work on any of my (high-valued) cars.

Haven't had an issue since then.

Although I just recently noticed that they like to use the impact gun wrench to tighten the lug-nuts. Which typically is a big NO-NO, UNLESS, you know what you're doing and are not letting the gun complete the tightening. The way I check this, is that if when they torque the lug-nuts, the torque wrench moves even a little, then they were spot on. But if the torque wrench doesn't move and goes straight to 'click', you may have an over-torqued lug nut. This actually happened to one of my GLA45. I broke a cheater bar trying to get them off. So, just FYI.

I would also highly recommend them. Here in CA they are known as AMERICA'S TIRE but it's the same exact company. They also now own TIRE RACK. I've taken all my cars here, including 3 M cars. They have never let me down, knock on wood.

I will buy tires from them, but I will not let them handle my wheels (bad experience with damage).

I had no idea DT bought TR!

Just looked it up and it happened back in 2021. Don’t know how I missed that headline back then.

I've had better luck at discount tire than the dealership. Years ago my dealership flung one of my M5 wheels off the balancer. I guess it shot the wheel across the room! They replaced the wheel and powercoated them all black for me for that mishap.

I have used discount tire a dozen times now. Ive never once had an issue other than waiting because they are always so busy.

Not the review you want to hear, but my buddy and I have used them for years. All different locations as we’ve moved around. He just has all 4 volk te on his tundra scratched while reinstalling from an idiot tech rushing on the last step. They mailed him a check for the cost of the wheels, refunded his install and never asked for the original set back. I’m officially a customer for life.

My wife’s car always has oem wheels and tire sizes. I take her car to Costco. Cheapest pricing and best warranty. A nail gets you a brand new tire, they don’t patch. They only work on oem wheels and tire sizing with limited tire options.

Chevy dealer wouldn't patch Super Sport on my Vette--right in the middle of the tread. Discount did an excellent job--no charge. Will only use them now. Will get my tires from Tire Rack--Discount owns them, and have Discount do the install.

Used them for many years, then had 2 problems in a row with one shop. Switched to Tire Rack and one of their good installers. Not going back.

I've used Discount many times without issue. Unfortunately they just bought me 2 new rear wheels because the tech scratched the crap out of them getting the wheel weights off and took a nice gouge on the face of one of the wheels. I was extremely disappointed but it happens.

Luckily I took video before I took them in and also spoke to the manager before hand and we went over the wheels so there was no hassle at all once he looked at them afterwards. The claims company initially just wanted to repair them but couldn't get a guarantee that they could get them 100% so they sent me a check for new wheels.

Just not sure where I want to take them now or give Discount a second chance?

Will they torque them the correct way if you request it? I have titanium bolts with the star torx.
