Running in period
Hey all,
Getting my first M3 soon and wanted to ask you guys if you have any advice/tips for the initial 1200miles where I need to carefully run the car in? Do I simply drive it really steadily or should I do something specific? Cheers |

There’s a picture of the owners manual. Personally I just kept it in comfort 98%. Just gradually go up to speed stated in the owners manual. & remember to drive your car often so you can get the break in over with |

Dude, this seems excruciatingly hard. How did you guys do it? I have my car coming in the spring, and the wait is not excruciating, but idea of having it bit not being able to push it seems far worse to me.

If you opted for the automatic, double check that you're in automatic and not manual when you shift out of park. A lot of people here probably hit +6k rpm accidentally. The G80 has a pretty poor UX for shifting between automatic and manual with either the gear or the D being lit up on your dash.

it's hard, but drive the car every day for a week and you can hit 1200 miles. The G80 is a lot of fun even in Efficient D1 Comfort. I scheduled my run in service when I collected my M3 -- the soonest appt was for 5 days later so I divided 1200 by 5...

I just followed the manual. My main advice is don't listen to the guys who bounce off the redline from day one. If you own vs lease, it is a minor inconvenience for peace of mind. As others have said, 1200mi does not take long. Take a few longer drives through the twisties if you can. I did over 200mi the first weekend I got mine driving from San Diego to Palm Springs and back. A few of those and little drives here and there, and its pretty easy. And mine is not even my DD.

as long as your not kicking down, i found the car itself was pretty good at keeping me under the rpm limit for the first stage of the break in period. she shifts a little earlier or right on time. it was a complete shocker when i was able to go up to 6000 in the second stage and you could feel that extra pull from 5000-6000rpm. what i would reccomend tho is go into settings and set a speed warning at 10km/hr below the first stage and adjust it to the second stage when your there.

nah trust you say that now until you’re driving and it’s impossible to tell how fast youre going without constantly checking.
she sits happy at 170km/hr. no difference at 210kms/hr. at around the 300 mark is where you’re starting to feel like you’re speeding but again shes very comfortable there too. I would set the speed warning just incase cause it takes less than 7seconds to reach it |

RTFM is just ages old forum speak, but that’s why I also posted the image, it’s not really an attack. Though I do stand by and you shall find. Especially if you add “Bimmerpost” to your google searches.
